Edward McNulty is a Presbyterian minister who has been using films for 40 years in his ministry. His M. Div. is from McCormick Theological Seminary, and his D. Min. is from United Theological seminary of Dayton, his thesis being, "From the Catacombs to the Silver Screen: The Changing Images of Christ."
He has served small and large churches in W.V., PA, OH, and NY. His writing began in the early 1970's, growing out of his work with children and youth. The first two of his eleven books were printed in 1976, and he has written about 1000 articles and film reviews for numerous magazines and newspapers, first Catholic and Methodist-sponsored, and now in Lectionary Homiletics, LectionAid, and Presbyterians Today. His last three books, all from Westminster/John Knox Press are, Praying the Movies: Daily Meditations From Classic Films; Praying the Movies II: More Daily Meditations From Classic Films; and Faith & Film: A Handbook for Leaders.
In 1990 McNulty founded the monthly journal Visual Parables to help educators and pastors find and use good films in their ministry. For six years he presented film seminars related to the theme of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Conference. He also has taught at elder hostels, seminaries, colleges, churches, and camps, from Massachusetts to California. He worked in television and radio, producing programs and writing "spots" that have been used around the country. He worked with Hollywood film director Michael Rhodes to produce a video series of Film Clips for church and school use.
Newspapers such as the Washington Post and the New York Daily News have written about his involvement with films, and the Charles Osgood radio show featured him in a segment. In 2009 McNulty was invited to serve on the Ecumenical Jury of the Montreal Film Festival. He is married to Sandra H. McNulty, a talented banner maker, and they are the parents of five grown children. The McNultys live in a cabin on a small lake in Walton, KY, from which McNulty conducts his writing and speaking ministry.
