Our Life after Death
A Firsthand Account from an 18th‑Century Scientist and Seer
by Emanuel Swedenborg
Swedenborg reveals the process by which we confront who we were on earth, discover our true selves, and through that knowledge find our eternal homes in the afterlife.
Our Life after Death is a collection of passages from Heaven and Hell that describe the soul's journey from the moment of death through the stages of self-discovery in the world of spirits.
"The world of the spirits is where we first arrive after death, being in due time either raised into heaven or cast into hell from it depending on our life in this world."—From Chapter One, Our Life After Death

We can’t run away from our lives, even in the afterlife, and our attitudes and values lead to heaven or hell after we die.
This book is not so much a travelogue of heaven and hell as it is a systematic description of the way the spiritual world works, and particularly what it means for a person to be heavenly or hellish.
Much of his Swedenborg's story will sound familiar to Mormons. He speaks of a place where spirits all gather after death (our first state) and await assignment to either heaven or hell (our second state).
