What Every Heart Longs For. What Every Church Can Be.
By James MacDonald
"I didn't just read this book—I savored it. It's packed with great content that every pastor, whether rookie or a veteran, will benefit from.
—Rick Warren, Pastor, Saddleback Church
Vertical Church points to a new day where God is the seeker, and we are the ones found.
This is a calling to all horizontal-church models with one emphasis or another to embrace the reality that no model of church as "work for God" can ever replicate or come remotely close to church as "encounter with God."
In addition to being an author and pastor, James' ministry includes a training center for pastors, a year-round camp, a biblical counseling center, a disaster recovery organization, and a Christian school.
For McDonald, power, glory, and sovereignty are the primary defining characteristics of God. Love is important but, as I read McDonald, love is conditioned more by divine power than power by divine love.
I remain astonished that anybody in a media-driven culture like our own would drive to a building to sit in a pew for an hour just to hear somebody talk about God. But they do. MacDonald would say of course they do.
The Vertical Church is by far, the most God focused, Christ centered book on the church I have ever read.
