From Mind Cure to Positive Thinking and the Prosperity Gospel
By John S. Haller, Jr.

Author Event at AAR

The Swedenborg Foundation Press will host a book launch and reception for John S. Haller Jr., author of The History of New Thought during the 2012 annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion.

Please join us at The Palmer House, 17 East Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60603 for discussions and refreshments on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 7-9 PM.  Author remarks will begin at 7:30 PM.

During his remarks titled "New Thought in American Culture," historian John S. Haller Jr. will trace the story of New Thought back to its early beginnings in the American rejection of Calvinist theology, the transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the visionary theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, though the mind-cure methods of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, the Christian Science of Mary Baker Eddy, the teaching of Emma Curtis Hopkins, and into modern times.  In the end, he finds that the true influence of New Thought goes beyond individuals and organizations; it represents a belief in the power of thought that has permeated American culture and become a part of our everyday lives.
