Our Take:

American Horror Story and the Currents of Magic

American Horror Story and the Currents of Magic

John Beckett

I had high hopes for American Horror Story: Coven and most of my expectations were not met. Still, it was enjoyable to watch and fun to follow, and it reflects a rising current of magic in the mainstream world.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN: What We Loved, and What We Hated

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN: What We Loved, and What We Hated

Peg Aloi

Lilith Dorsey and I had nearly weekly video chats about the show, half rant, half rapture. Because, as irritating as we found the show to be at times, we also found it very entertaining and compelling. Say what you will, it is hard to remain indifferent to a show this intense. But its flaws were every bit as dramatic as its charms.

It's the end of "American Horror Story Coven," and I'm betting I liked it a lot less than most of you.

Voodoo Priestess Says Bye Bye American Horror Story Coven

Zombies, Witch Hunters, Red-Eyed Papa Legba, and Blood Bathing Marie Laveau, honestly even if I live to see the seven wonders... I may never see anything as strange as this again. American Horror Story: Coven has brought New Orleans Voodoo and Witchcraft into our living rooms these past several months, and we may never be the same again.

Legba Is Different From The Barons: We All Look Alike to You?

There are a lot of divinities, or Lwa, in the Voodoo pantheon -- some say 101, some say 401, some say as many as you can imagine and then add one more. There are legions of spirits, each one unique and sacred in its own blessed way.

The Voodoo Truth About Papa Legba

The Voodoo Truth About Papa Legba

Lilith Dorsey

The portrayal of Papa Legba in this week's episode of American Horror Story: Coven left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, or should I say, up their noses. May I state now unequivocally as both an anthropologist and a Voodoo priestess that there is no association between Legba and drugs that I have ever come across in my over twenty years of practice and study. This week's episode, in addition to having this ancient honored deity disrespectfully portrayed as a drug sniffing control freak, also shows him as a baby stealing, soul sucking devil.

Countdown to Stevie Nicks! THIS WEDNESDAY!

Countdown to Stevie Nicks! THIS WEDNESDAY!

Peg Aloi

We here at The Media Witch's magical headquarters, opium den and Dionysian Emporium have been very excited about the forthcoming appearance of the great STEVIE NICKS on American Horror Story: Coven. This Wednesday night the Welsh White Witch herself, the goddess of breakup rock, the twirling-in-shawl-and-boots-babe of our wildest dreams will be on FX's witchy show that is among the hottest series of the season. Be there or be square!

Voodoo Priestess Predicts Bad Things for Legba’s Arrival on American Horror Story Coven

Joining the American Horror Story Coven cast in the role of, you guessed it, Papa Legba, will be Lance Reddick. This can't be good. They are already touting him as the Voodoo Devil, and let the stereotypes continue.

The Horrors of American Horror Story Coven: A Voodoo Priestess’ Perspective

The Horrors of American Horror Story Coven: A Voodoo Priestess’ Perspective

Lilith Dorsey

The season is full of tropes, tricks, and trash and it's time to get real. I salute their attempt to show Voodoo as a method of social control, but, and here's my own cliché for you: we don't need no stinking zombies.

Help Us, Stevie Nicks. You’re Our Only Hope

Help Us, Stevie Nicks. You’re Our Only Hope

Peg Aloi

Hey, AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN, Who Are You to Keep Us Down? Five episodes in, I think it’s safe to say the show’s creators are not terribly interested in portraying modern witchcraft or Voodoo as life-affirming spiritual paths.

It is the true cross quarter of Samhain tonight, and so Lilith Dorsey and I will be wearing black (well, we usually do anyway) for our Samhain Edition of  our weekly chat. Here’s the link to the recorded video! This show just keeps getting crazier and more intense, doesn’t it?

American Horror Story: Fearful Pranks Ensue

American Horror Story: Fearful Pranks Ensue

It's Halloween for America's most notorious witches, what treats or tricks did American Horror Story serve up this time around? Zombies, vengeance, and an overly eccentric Witch Council, it's like all the Samhains you celebrate in your neighborhood, right?

This week's episode, "Fearful Pranks Ensue," was one of the liveliest yet, (and also takes place at Hallowe'en!) and we're left with many unsolved mysteries.

Re-enchanting the World

Re-enchanting the World

John Beckett

The current trend of supernatural TV shows reflects the general feeling that something is wrong with our world, as well as the desire for magical skills to cope with these troublesome times. We can be mindlessly entertained by Hollywood witchcraft, we can be depressed because it isn’t real, or we can use it as inspiration to do something that is real.

Oh, look! Witches are media darlings. AGAIN. (SIGH)

Oh, look! Witches are media darlings. AGAIN. (SIGH)

Peg Aloi

Remember the late 1990s? THE CRAFT? Then CHARMED? Then BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? Then THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? Then all the witchcraft stuff appearing in episodes of shows like THE X-FILES, MILLENNIUM, etc.? To quote one of the creepier moments of TWIN PEAKS: "It is happening again. It is happening right now."

American Horror Story: COVEN Reinvents the Witch Archetype

American Horror Story: COVEN Reinvents the Witch Archetype

Peg Aloi

I know, as a media critic and practicing witch and activist, that I am supposed to be overtly critical of media portrayals that trumpet the “evil witch” stereotype, but honestly, isn’t the over-the-top witch narrative something many of us were raised on and that we secretly love, crave, even?

Sell My Soul: Commodification in Voodoo and Santeria (La Regla Lukumi)

Sell My Soul: Commodification in Voodoo and Santeria (La Regla Lukumi)

Lilith Dorsey

Sex sells. Sin sells. Voodoo sells. It's true, I didn't make it up. The current season of American Horror Story Coven uses a bizarre mix of reality and supreme fantasy to get its point across, a major clothing manufacturer places a giant veve (ritual symbol) for Papa Legba in its store window to sell t-shirts, and I'm left shaking my head.

Last night Lilith Dorsey (of Voodoo Universe), Tehron Gillis, Jason Mankey (of Raise the Horns) enjoyed chatting about the latest episode of American Horror Story: COVEN. It was a lively conversation about fried chicken, zombies, and, of course, boy parts.

The Real Voodoo Queen: Marie Laveau

The Real Voodoo Queen: Marie Laveau

Lilith Dorsey

There may have been other Voodoo priestesses before her in the city of New Orleans, but there was no one like Marie Laveau, except maybe her daughter, but I will explain that later. This legendary Voodoo woman was said to do everything from providing psychic consultations for Queen Victoria to concocting psychedelic gumbo for inmates sentenced to hang in the gallows.

So, some lucky critics got to see a preview of AMERICA HORROR STORY: COVEN recently, and the verdict from Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd is that it is the best (read: most accessible and "least weird") season yet. Apparently there is even some comedy to lighten the mood!
