A Bad Example of Trying to Explain Climate Change to Deniers

This video titled “Tucker Carlson DESTROYS Liberal Cal State Professor 1/4/17” popped up in my suggested videos on YouTube and because I wanted to procrastinate some more, I clicked on it. I was thinking the person who titled the video probably had a strong conservative bias, but maybe the liberal actually did look really bad. [Read More…]

The Weather Channel Calls Out Breitbart News For Spreading Climate Change Hoax

I never thought I would see The Weather Channel get into a debate with Breitbart News, but this last election season has shown that anything is possible. The Weather Channel was unhappy that Breitbart posted an article using one of their videos to mislead Americans about climate change. Note to @BreitbartNews: Earth Is Not Cooling, Climate Change [Read More…]

Study finds that belief in miracles is associated with poorer health outcomes

There is a great deal of scientific literature that analyzes how religious belief impacts physical and mental health. Religiosity has been documented as having both positive and negative effects on people’s health, depending on exactly what they believe. For example, belief in God can reduce anxiety, but not if you think God is punishing you. A new study [Read More…]

Science Debunks These Five Common Myths About Bisexuality

Bisexuality simply means that a person is attracted to their own gender as well as other genders. However, bisexuality is a frequently misunderstood sexual orientation and several common myths have been spread among heterosexual and homosexual people alike. As someone who has recently come out as bisexual, I’d like to counter these myths with science as well as [Read More…]

Neil deGrasse Tyson gives disappointing answers when asked about the sexual harassment in science

As someone passionate about science and science communication, I’m a big fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s work. I haven’t seen Dr. Tyson speak much about social issues, but it was nice to see him call out this sexist question at a conference a few years ago. However, when Dr. Tyson was asked about sexual harassment and [Read More…]

375 of the world’s leading scientists warn us to not vote for Trump

I’ve repeatedly said that a Donald Trump presidency would be harmful for everyone. His ridiculous policies, total lack of experience, open bigotry, and terrible temperament make him an overwhelmingly terribly candidate. However, his stance on climate change is enough of a reason to make sure he never is elected. Donald Trump and Mike Pence both refuse to accept the scientific [Read More…]

Mother leaves anti-vaccine movement after her kids nearly die from preventable virus

Thankfully, Kristen O’Meara’s children will be fine, but that almost wasn’t the case. All three of O’Meara’s children were diagnosed with rotavirus, a serious, but easily prevented illness. Afterward, O’Meara re-evaluated her position and now accepts the science behind vaccines. O’Meara now wants to change the minds of other parents who are anti-vaccine: “I got absorbed in the [Read More…]

Stop sharing links from these biased websites and use these trusted ones instead

My colleague Ed Brayton recently posted an excellent article summarizing some of the most inaccurate and biased left-leaning websites. If we care about honesty and improving the arguments from “our side” then we should be happy to call out misinformation or distortion whenever we see it. Here is the list of websites that I agree with [Read More…]

Products that claim to “detox” are nonsense and a waste of money

I remember reading the label of a juice bottle in Whole Foods that claimed to “detox” you. If you drank three bottles a day for a month, your body would be “purged of toxins” and each bottle cost $8! That would be about $750 for your “detox” which science has shown to be a complete myth. This “detox” scam actually has [Read More…]

Feminism and the science of religious belief (VIDEO)

I was recently interviewed on the Road To Reason TV show and I’d like to share the video now that it’s online! I covered a variety of topics including how I became an atheist, my gender equality and sexual violence prevention activism, as well as some of the psychology and neuroscience of religious belief. It [Read More…]
