Matt And Lou's Wedding

This morning it was my delight to be involved in the marriage of my good friends Matt and Lou. They chose to create their own vows based quite closely on the ones my own wife and I wrote back in 1995. So, the following words brought back good memories:

Before God and before this congregation, I will ask you to declare your freedom and readiness to enter into the covenant of marriage. I will also ask your families and this congregation to affirm their willingness to support you today and in the years to come.

Due notice of the intention of Matthew and Louise to be married has been given and no objection has been made.

I ask you Matthew and Louise to declare that you know of no reason in law that you may not be married.

I declare that I know not of any legal reason why I, Matthew Henry Legg, may not be joined in marriage to Louise Michelle Barnett

I declare that I know not of any legal reason why I, Louise Michelle Barnett , may not be joined in marriage to Matthew Henry Legg.

Matthew Henry Legg will you take Louise Michelle Barnett to be your wife in Christian marriage. Will you love, comfort, honour and protect her, in times of prosperity and health and in times of trouble and suffering? And will you be faithful to her, forsaking all others as long as you both so live?

With God’s I will

Louise Michelle Barnett will you take Matthew Henry Legg to be your husband in Christian marriage. Will you love, comfort, honour and protect him, in times of prosperity and health and in times of trouble and suffering? And will you be faithful to him forsaking all others as long as you both shall live?

With God’s I will

Please stand. Will all of you, family and friends, of Matthew and Louise by God’s grace, do everything in your power to uphold and care for these two in life together.

We will

I, Matthew Henry Legg, take you, Louise Michelle Barnett, to be my lawful wedded wife. I promise by God’s grace as He enables me to love you as Christ loves the church and to daily make sacrifices for you. I will put your needs before mine and consider you in all my decisions.

I will encourage you and strengthen you in your walk with God and in all that you do. I promise to be joyful and to call on God for his peace in all that we encounter, knowing in faith, that He is always at work for our good. I will not let the sun go down on my anger but will be kind and compassionate to you. Forgiving you, just as Christ has forgiven me.

I give myself to you as your husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do us part or until Jesus returns.

I acknowledge my need for God’s grace, in my inability to do these things and rely on His power to enable me to live in a Godly way as your husband. I will be true to the promise I have made to you and to the One who gave you to me.

I acknowledge God’s given authority and in doing so I put my trust in Him and will not give way to fear. I will cultivate the beauty that comes from a gentle and quiet spirit, knowing that this is of great value to God.

I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage. With my body I honour you, all that I am I give to you, all that I have I share with you with in the love of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Since Matthew and Louise have agreed to come together in Christian marriage, and have made their promises before God and this congregation, and because they have declared this openly by the giving and receiving of rings, In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, I now pronounce them man and wife. Those whom God has joined together let no man separate. You may now kiss the bride!
