SERMON: The Trinity and You

adrian preaching trinity at jubilee

This is the video of the sermon I preached this morning followed by a full set of notes.AudioHow do you tend to think of God? A Force or Power? A remote ruler? An angry judge? But the Bible reveals that God is intensely personal and he is very interested in you. HE wants to know you.  Part of getting to know someone is getting to know about someone. It is not enough to merely learn about them, but it is a helpful and necessary start. We must know why we believe what we believe and … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Why doesn’t the Bible condemn slavery?

straight to the heart

This blog is adapted from a chapter in Phil Moore’s new devotional commentary, “Straight to the Heart of Galatians to Colossians”, published this month by Monarch Books. You can visit Phil Moore Books or follow him on Twitter.WHY DOESN’T THE NEW TESTAMENT CONDEMN SLAVERY? “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5) William Knibb, a British missionary to colonial Jamaica, wrote home: “The cursed blast … [Read more...]

Galatians to Revelation on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

I conclude my list of verses on the charismatic issue by sharing some verses from the rest of the New Testament. On Monday I will be blogging about something very different, God willing. If I have missed any important verses please do let me know. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8)Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are … [Read more...]

Are there apostles today?

John-MacArthur

I am nearing the end of my series on Strange Fire.  It may feel interminable for some, but believe me when I get the bit between my teeth, sometimes I keep at it a lot longer than I will have done on this!Today I turn to an argument that MacArthur uses against the charismatic movement. He takes some of the odd things some people say and do about the idea of apostles today and rightly rejects that. But again he fails to interact with more responsible groups who do believe in apostles today. … [Read more...]

The vital roles of Union AND Fellowship with Jesus

This quote from Terry Virgo is just too good not to share.  Many people fail to appreciate the two very distinct yet crucial sources of comfort to the Christian.  They miss the power that is available to us. They miss the transformation God intends us to experience: Unbelievers are under the impression that Christians are forced into morality, obey rules and go to church. If they really understood that we’d found the secret of being content they’d wonder where we got it. And they’d queue up outsi … [Read more...]

TOAM10 – Terry Virgo on Ephesians 6

Terry began by saying he has always loved the book of Ephesians. He admitted at one point his Bible probably fell open at Ephesians 4! The book has a remarkable focus on the church and clarity about the gospel. The whole book seems to be preparing us for this chapter and for warfare. The new age has begun. New man has been created. Mystery has been revealed. There is, however, a backdrop of fierce opposition. He is giving strength to Gods warriors. These great truths come to life in the … [Read more...]

Christian Hedonism and Christian Marriage

The final post in my series interacting with John Piper is again on marriage. Seeking the happiness of yourself in the happiness of your wife is key to a joyful relationship. We look forward to hearing from John tomorrow, and in due time I will share notes and video of the sessions here. May all our marriages be informed by this quote:A husband and wife should pursue their own joy in the joy of each other. There is scarcely a more hedonistic passage in the Bible than Ephesians 5:25–30. This t … [Read more...]

Four Dangers of Preaching Slowly Through a Book of the Bible

I should say up front that this is an illusion. I may seem to be back from my blogging break over Christmas and the New Year, but the truth is, I am not. I need all my spare time at the moment to work on my book. So I'm planning to share some extracts from a series of posts I wrote previously on preaching. I have set up my blog to do this entirely automatically every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the next few weeks. I hope you enjoy this series. Please, also, remember to pray for me as I am … [Read more...]

Piper What the New Birth Does For Us

John Piper is a great preacher—not just to listen to, but also to watch. I find God stirring my heart through him every time I play one of his videos. It also reminds me of what I'm aiming for when I preach, which is "logic on fire." I pray that God will draw many into his purposes in the way he has drawn John Piper.Today I want to highlight one of the sermons in his series on the new birth - Why Do We Need To Be Born Again? (Part 2). Here is an excerpt of this excellent sermon, which serves a … [Read more...]
