Books to Help You Read The Bible

We have been speaking about preaching and the importance of Christians understanding the message of the Bible. We are drawing near to the end of this extended series. I felt, however, that I should not leave the series without sharing a few resources with you that are still fairly new and will definitely help you to study the Bible yourself. The last year or so has been a great year for Christian publishing, with some fantastic books being published. The following list is some of the best of … [Read more...]

SERMON – The Reviving Power of God's Word

The following is a full set of notes, including background information and quotes I used whilst preparing my sermon entitled, "The Reviving Power of God's Word," which was preached at Jubilee Church on the 11th of March 2006. This sermon was the third part of a series on Revival. The earlier messages, "Revival" and "Reviving Prayer" are also available.Much of this material was never designed to form part of the sermon — instead it is, if you like, part of the "iceberg" that lies beneath the … [Read more...]

SERMON – Reviving Prayer – 1 Kings 17:1 to 2 Kings 2:14

The following is a full set of notes, including background information and quotes I used whilst preparing my sermon entitled, "Reviving Prayer," which was preached at Jubilee Church on the 25th of February 2006. Much of this material was never designed to form part of the sermon — instead it is, if you like, part of the "iceberg" that lies beneath the surface supporting what I actually said. You can download the audio (you may need to right click and save the file onto your PC) or listen right … [Read more...]

Should We be Optimistic or Pessimistic About the Future?

Mark Dever over at Together for the Gospel has written about how we should expect persecution. He may well be right. As I read his post, however, and also a few of his buddy, Al Mohler's, cultural observations, I wonder if I detect a more general note of pessimism about the future of the church.I may very well be wrong about that in the case of the individual people I mention, but I'm sure there are many Christians who are, indeed, very negative about the future. It certainly seems that … [Read more...]

REMOTE BLOGGING – The Resolved Conference

Tim Challies gets to live-blog more and more conferences. Soon it seems he will just live at a conference permanently. I have only ever done this with one conference — Together On A Mission 06. Live-blogging is simply sharing notes and reflections of the sessions. I have made it something of a tradition that I extract a few quotes from these posts. I call it “remote blogging.” Examples include Together for the Gospel 06 and Worship God 06. So here goes with this latest conference. I will … [Read more...]

SERMON – How to Define Revival and be Revived Personally

This past Sunday I preached on revival. You can download the audio or listen right here using the following embedded player. I have shared my notes almost exactly as I preached from them. They might not make a great deal of sense to someone else, for which I apologise. Hopefully the audio is easier to follow. This was a hard sermon to prepare, but one that I really felt assisted by God as I preached.1. Why do we need revival? “we begin to die @ birth” ...Death since Adams sin – sickness … [Read more...]

INTERVIEW – Wayne Grudem, Part Six – Did Steve Chalke Blaspheme About the Atonement?

This interview is being serialised over several days. So far I have published part one, which focused on personal issues, and part two, in which we discussed Systematic Theology. In part three we explored Grudem's charge that feminism inevitably leads to a denial of Scripture's authority. Part four honed in on the "trajectory" arguments used on both sides of this debate. In part five we looked at the issue of women addressing church congregations. We now continue the interview with a look at a … [Read more...]

AUDIO – The Attributes of God: What is God Like?

At Jubilee we have been doing a series of talks this autumn, each one lasting about an hour, during which we attempt to instruct the hearer to a greater extent than is possible in our Sunday morning sermons. One of the ones I did - which was on the subject of "What is God Like?" - has just been made available online at the Jubilee Audio Sermons site. You can visit there to download the sermon or listen to it here: These talks have been inspired by the following verse: “Do your best to … [Read more...]

PIPER FRIDAY – Fear Shot Through With Joy

Today I want to bring you a quote from a sermon by John Piper: The Present Effects of Trembling at the Wrath of God. Thanks to the wonders of the new Desiring God website, you can watch, read, or listen to the full sermon there. This quote expresses the results of a view of God that is balanced between fear and joy. Too many Christians veer into one or the other extreme. Sometimes we see only the kindness of God and imagine that he is some kind of sugar daddy in the sky who is all sweetness and … [Read more...]

PIPER FRIDAY – A Sermon From Proverbs

Not unsurprisingly, I am somewhat preoccupied by Proverbs at the moment. Today I want to share with you an extended quote from one of John Piper's sermons on Proverbs. I will share the quote and allow Piper to speak. I cannot encourage you enough to go read the whole sermon, or even listen to it online. This extract shows how Piper laboured with a single proverb to put it in context and truly understand it. It is a great illustration of what we were learning about proverbs from Dan Phillips … [Read more...]
