Jesus the Great Evangelist: a sermon on John 4

Jesus is the model evangelist and we can learn from his example how to get caught up on his mission to seek and save the lost. This is a sermon about the Woman of Samaria in John 4. Brief sermon notes follow the audio.John 4:1-42We tend to think of Jesus as the Great Shepherd or Pastor, or as the Great Priest, as the Great Apostle of our faith, as the Great Teacher, as the Greatest Prophet of them all. But he was also the greatest evangelist.1. What do you live for?Jesus … [Read more...]

God’s Not Dead: The Movie, and a new friend

Gods-Not-Dead-Facebook

It seems clear to me that 2014 is going to go down as the year of the religious movie. There are a lot of Hollywood movies this year that are covering various biblical stories, and I must say I am looking forward to all of them. God's Not Dead is a movie that I had not heard of until a few minutes ago when I connected for the first time with Rice Broocks thanks to my new favourite web video conferencing program, Zoom.us.  Incidentally, you will most likely be seeing a lot more of Zoom around h … [Read more...]

Q and A time with Eddy Leo and Terry Virgo

After last week's videos from Eddy Leo and Terry Virgo, you may have a lot of questions.  If so, perhaps some of them were answered for you in this Q and A time:Download the mp3 … [Read more...]

What is the fivefold ministry? How do apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers function?

Terry Virgo has spent decades planting churches and releasing ministries to support and strengthen the body so all can carry out the works of ministry. This fantastic video is his wisdom distilled into a single session. Here are a few highlights to draw you in to watch the rest:"The shepherd is a key biblical picture. Relational. Belonging" "The shepherds, overseers, elders, bishops, pastors are all interchangeable words for those responsible to care for the flock." "Jeremiah tells us … [Read more...]

God’s Eternal Purpose and your church: session by Eddy Leo

Perhaps you think you understand small group ministry.  Perhaps you have got frustrated because your cell group doesn't seem to grow like it should.  Perhaps you are concerned that people in your church are not maturing as they should.  I would urge you at the beginning of this year to set aside some time to watch this video carefully and ask God to open your eyes to a new perspective on what exactly God's eternal purpose is, and how that can be worked out among us.In the last post I shared a … [Read more...]

Galatians to Revelation on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

I conclude my list of verses on the charismatic issue by sharing some verses from the rest of the New Testament. On Monday I will be blogging about something very different, God willing. If I have missed any important verses please do let me know. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8)Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are … [Read more...]

What the Corinthian letters have to say about the charismatic gifts

Of course for many charismatics 1 and 2 Corinthians are among their favorite books of the Bible. If I may be allowed to make one comment as I introduce these verses, it would be instead to ask two questions. If these verses do not apply to us today, why are they in the Bible?  And, on what basis can we determine which other verses also do not apply to us?  I have already posted verses that speak to this matter from Acts, the Gospels, and the OT. I give thanks to my God always for you because of … [Read more...]

John Stott on non-authoritative NT prophecy

1482186_10151780081126569_159557811_n

As far as I know John Stott was a cessationist through and through.  This makes his attached statement about  New Testament prophecy all the more credible and significant. It is worthy of our consideration because what is happening here is that a good biblical scholar is allowing the Bible to take him in the direction of something that could potentially undermine his position.  We all do well to approach the Bible with a similar reverence.Of course there are degrees of charismaticism and ce … [Read more...]

Are there apostles today?

John-MacArthur

I am nearing the end of my series on Strange Fire.  It may feel interminable for some, but believe me when I get the bit between my teeth, sometimes I keep at it a lot longer than I will have done on this!Today I turn to an argument that MacArthur uses against the charismatic movement. He takes some of the odd things some people say and do about the idea of apostles today and rightly rejects that. But again he fails to interact with more responsible groups who do believe in apostles today. … [Read more...]

Why cessationists are wrong about prophecy

20131016-093651.jpg

Later today the Strange Fire conference hosted by John MacArthur begins. A few weeks back I expressed my concern about some of the publicity for this event seeming to accuse all charismatics of being blasphemers. This event also prompted Terry Virgo to share a video about how Lloyd-Jones encouraged him as a young charismatic.I will be watching at least some of the event online. But one thing I am not expecting to hear is a novel or convincing argument from Scripture. I just want to state … [Read more...]
