The State of the Evangelical Movement – from Ed Stetzer with my own thoughts interjected

These notes reflect my own impressions of what Ed Stetzer had to say at the recent Dwell London event. He was doing a seminar for cross-cultural workers to help them understand the current evangelical movement.  There are many of my own comments entwined with what Ed actually had to say. So blame me, rather than him for anything you disagree with, and credit him and not me for anything useful! Anytime I use the word “I” in these notes, this definitely reflects my opinion, not Ed’s necessarily. An … [Read more...]

Dwell: Terry Virgo on how prayer is essential for church planting

The second session of Saturday's Dwell conference was based on similar material to the most popular video I have ever hosted here. Although I have heard that material before, this was adapted for church leaders, and it did me good to listen to it live and again. I think I will need to hear Terry often on prayer. For I need him to remind me of how essential it is for me to withdraw and wrestle with God.Prayer is essential to church planting.Elijah had seen his nation turn from God. 58 years … [Read more...]

Ed Stetzer Interviews Terry Virgo of Newfrontiers

Terry Virgo founded Newfrontiers back in the mid 1970s. He was church planting before it was cool. He formed a missional network before the phrase was coined. There are now over 700 Newfrontiers churches spread out on every continent. Most of these began as house churches. But many of them have grown to become warehouse churches. Each of these churches and the movement as a whole is founded on prayer. It is a movement that has aimed to reconstruct a New Testament model of church, convinced from … [Read more...]

A Group Of Early Pioneers

As I continue my time with the Newfrontiers Midwest churches , I am reminded of the old-time pioneers.  They would load up their family in a wagon and head out to where no-one they knew had gone before.  Eager to put down a stake as a marker and claim the ground, some of the old towns were barely built when the relentless march westwards would continue.  There is something of the same spirit here.I spent the last twenty-four hours with Tommy Stanley, his family, and church in the Kansas City ar … [Read more...]

INTERVIEW – Jeremy Simpkins

On my recent visit to northern England, I was able to interview the leader of the Newfrontiers North team. I was deeply impressed with what I saw and heard during the day as his team of around 100 people gathered. God is doing a great work in the North of England and many healthy growing churches have been planted. There was also an amazing sense of community and true friendship in the room. It was wonderful to see a group of leaders with very different gifts and personalities fused together … [Read more...]

Interview With "Bones" A Pastor From Zimbabwe

Anyone who knows me well knows that I have a soft spot for this troubled African country. It was where my wife grew up for a start. Also, who cannot feel compassion for this nation which should be one of the wealthiest in Africa and yet faces abject poverty? What amazes me is the way God seems to be working in this land. Good, doctrinally solid churches seem to be springing up all over the place! Not only are there 16 Zimbabwe churches directly in relationship with Newfrontiers, but there are … [Read more...]

Are You Allergic To Strategy? Guest Post By Matt Sweetman

Its the turn of a church planter in Chicago today to guest blog for me:In Newfroniters we talk a lot about church planting. It's a core value. We spend a lot of money on it. We give away our best people to it. Family members move hundreds and thousands of miles away from each other to make it happen. It is a one of the hardest things we do but one of the most important. I am convinced that every reference in scripture to the mission of God finds its practical fulfillment in the process of … [Read more...]

Nigel Ring on How He Serves Terry Virgo

Every leader needs a Nigel. I first met him and his wife many years ago as he will mention in todays guest post about how he has helped in the work of Newfrontiers:At the recent Newfrontiers TOAM Conference I felt God prompt me to testify at the end of Joel Virgo’s talk about being armour bearers to leaders. Several have generously said this was helpful so I will fill in a bit of the history Terry and I have had together. We first met in 1968. My wife and I wanted to start a Bible Study group i … [Read more...]

Love Truth and Power. Guest Post From Andrew Fountain

Andrew is a dear friend of mine and leads Newlife Church Toronto. He blogs at In Christ. Andrew has an interesting story in that he was principal of Toronto Baptist Seminary when the "Toronto blessing" hit. Circumstances seemed to conspire to force him into making a choice between his reformed heritage and a charismatic experience. He refused to make that choice and in this guest post explains his passion for building a different kind of church:I was once visiting a church and the pastor … [Read more...]
