A bit of happiness on a Monday morning

So it's Monday morning. Another week begins. Do you choose weariness and despair, or hope and joy? Last week's news both in the Church, and in the World was pretty miserable, I think we can all agree on that. You can imagine then how welcome it was on Sunday to hear at Jubilee a sermon on happiness. Christians have the source of true happiness that is not dependent on happenings.Sometimes it takes an anthem from the secular world to express things that really should be our domain. But, … [Read more...]

Why God doesn’t want you to have a personal relationship with him

Wait, so I have finally become a heretic right with a headline like that, right? It is perhaps a slight overstatement of my point but if I added the word "only" then I hope you would see my point entirely. A couple of days ago an article was going around the internet proposing that the Southern "Y'all" could help us move away from the independent "personal" approach to our faith that is so rampant throughout the English speaking world. In the past we used "Thou" as a plural for "you" but … [Read more...]

Is the concept of privacy and discretion dead even among Christians?

This week there has been another stirring in the Christian blogosphere. A sometimes controversial church leader wrote a letter which he wanted to remain private to his congregation. One of his critics obtained a copy of that letter and leaked it onto the Internet.  I was aware of this, and like some other bloggers and official journalists, I requested the church to confirm whether the letter was genuine, and asked for their permission to share the correspondence on my blog. The church … [Read more...]

All we need is love: discussion with Frank Viola about Social Media Principles and Practice for Christians

Frank Viola and I connected online to record this conversation via zoom.us, a tool I am finding very helpful. We spoke about how to approach the Internet, and especially how to approach the arguments that occur online.  We spoke about the risks and benefits of social media.  God's people do not stop being his people when they launch an Internet browser. Exploring together how God would want us to behave in this brave new world is vital. The conversation was at times humourous, and at times F … [Read more...]

Henry Tyler: Getting your marching orders. Missional preaching from the 1980s

This is the real cream of the crop of this discipleship series. No one is a disciple until they are also engaged in the mission of making disciples. Missional is a buzz word today, but here is an example from the 1980s of a talk designed to help us get caught up with God's purposes. Brilliantly pastoral, Henry explores the reasons why so many Christians struggle with evangelism. You won't feel condemned listening to this talk, but you will be inspired to a life of reaching out and showing love … [Read more...]

More discipleship from Henry Tyler: “Being a High Flier for God”

In this second session of the audio discipleship course I introduced you to in the last post, Henry wisely dissects the difference between selfish ambition and godly ambition. Every young person should definitely listen to this, and every older person will also benefit. God really does want you to be successful in the tasks he has for you. These talks will help you to pursue your purpose diligently but not arrogantly. … [Read more...]

Learn from my mentor Henry Tyler, a wise pastor now in glory

20131223-221124.jpg

I have been looking forward to this moment for a very long time. I have a real treat for you over the next week or so. I invite you to join me in being trained by a wise older brother, who has now long been in glory.  The next few posts are really an audio discipleship course. These messages have been lost for decades, but after repeated appeals on this blog, someone has discovered a dusty set of tapes and sent them to me to digitise.Henry Tyler was a mentor to me many years ago. You can … [Read more...]
