The EU’s shameful abandonment of Mediterranean Search and Rescue

I woke this morning to hear that the UK (and the rest of the EU) have decided to stop search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean. The Italian navy has been patrolling and rescuing 150,000 people who were at risk of drowning as they tried to get from Africa to Europe as migrants. The claim is that the existence of such a safety net only encourages the migrants to risk the dangerous journey. But will migrants really be aware of the withdrawal of these patrols? Will those packing them … [Read more...]

In light of recent coverage on my blog about the plight of religious schools of all kinds, it is a delight to welcome Gill Robins, the founder of Christians in Education, and a previous Deputy Head to guest post here on the blog. I know many of my readers are Americans, but please do understand that the very same tendencies are happening right under your noses in the USA.As Gill points out, "This is all just a convenient catalyst through which all expressions of faith in public spaces can be … [Read more...]

This just released from the Association of Christian Teachers:ACT – now to keep religious freedom in our schools. There has never been a time like this. UK Independent Christian School releases details of government closure threat

What a difference a year makes in modern Britain if you are a religious school.  In yesterday's article I suggested there may be a secret plan to neuter or close all religious schools in the UK.  One of the affected schools has now released more information about what they have faced. Trinity Christian School is a tiny, independently run school which takes no money from the government. In November 2013 it received the following commendation on its first Ofsted visit: The provision for pupils’ sp … [Read more...]

In London? Go to Wembley and see Love Beyond Musical TONIGHT

Thanks to the kindness of the organizers, I was able to attend last night's performance of the musical Love Beyond in which the Bible gets the West End treatment. I went with six children (no, I haven't had another kid, one of them just brought a friend!). Their ages went from 17 down to 7, and they all loved it. Even though it went on until late, they were humming some of the tunes on the way home. It was well worth the additional challenge of getting them up for school this … [Read more...]

Understanding the violent age the OT occurred in

I thought it was high time I returned to the long running series of posts about leadership lessons from I and II Samuel. Sometimes as you read Scripture you come to a chapter that at first glance it is hard to get comfort, a teaching, or instruction from. 1 Samuel 27 is one such chapter.  In it we see one of the Bible's leading heroes running away, allying himself with God's enemies, ingratiating himself by raiding other villages and leaving nobody alive, and convincing God's enemies that he h … [Read more...]

One hundred years ago today the dream of human progress died

The Victorian era was the time of great advance. Continual industrial revolution. Civilisation. As the 20th Century began, mankind was full of hope. The bold notion grew that the Human Spirit would itself evolve and leave behind its savage impulses. Then, one fateful day a war began so terrible that it was called the Great War, and touted as the war to end all wars. Europe, so long seen as the seedbed of democracy and civilization descended into barbarity. And just in Britain almost … [Read more...]

The heavens declare the glory of God. The sky above proclaims his handiwork

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. (Psalm 19)  … [Read more...]
