LIVE interview with Michael L Brown on hypergrace

Dr Michael Brown

Today I was joined in a web conversation by Dr Michael Brown. Our focus was  his new book Hyper-grace.You can watch the video right here or listen to the audio. I've set it to start playback at 16:00, which is the point we start talking about Hyper-grace. If you do want to hear us reminiscing about how we first met as a result of the Strange Fire controversy just rewind to the beginning of the clip. Soundcloud doesn't seem to allow me to do the same thing as far as I can tell.If the … [Read more...]

Strange Fire Debate stoked by Grace To You Internet Ministry Coordinator

Over on Twitter, and also in the comments section of my recent post about how Christians should behave online, someone who describes himself as a representative of Grace To You (although he has been in touch to make clear that his posts on Twitter are not in his official capacity) has been string up the embers of debate that I have left alone for weeks now.  This is far from over, however, and I see that many people are still reading, and writing about the debate even after all these … [Read more...]

Discussion with Michael Brown on Authentic Fire & how to disagree amicably

Yesterday I appeared for the second time on Michael L Brown's radio show. You can download the MP3 here.I have to say that meeting Dr Brown online has been one thing I've been very pleased came out of the Strange Fire discussion. He is a good man, as we discussed on his show he and I would probably disagree about a bunch of stuff, but what unites us far outweighs that which divides.  I believe that a new effort towards unity is vital now, both between various different types of biblical sane … [Read more...]

Galatians to Revelation on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

I conclude my list of verses on the charismatic issue by sharing some verses from the rest of the New Testament. On Monday I will be blogging about something very different, God willing. If I have missed any important verses please do let me know. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8)Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are … [Read more...]

What the Corinthian letters have to say about the charismatic gifts

Of course for many charismatics 1 and 2 Corinthians are among their favorite books of the Bible. If I may be allowed to make one comment as I introduce these verses, it would be instead to ask two questions. If these verses do not apply to us today, why are they in the Bible?  And, on what basis can we determine which other verses also do not apply to us?  I have already posted verses that speak to this matter from Acts, the Gospels, and the OT. I give thanks to my God always for you because of … [Read more...]

What do Acts and Romans say about the charismatic discussion?

In these few posts I am wanting to simply draw our attention to what the Scriptures say on the debate that has been raging recently. I am trying not to pass comment on these verses but allowing them to speak for themselves. It is worth pointing out one key difference in the way that charismatics approach Acts in particular, however. For us, this book is broadly speaking intended to be a normative model of what the Church can be like at best. For more of that follow the link, but here are the … [Read more...]

The Charismatic gifts debate: verses from the Gospels

In the last post I shared some OT verses which speak to the charismatic debate. Today, I continue with some passages from the Gospels. Read these, and try to allow the Bible to shape your viewpoint, not your traditions, whichever side of the fence you have come down on so far. Please also share any key verses I may have missed in the comment section. “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind recei … [Read more...]

Why I am a charismatic: The OT Bible verses

With all the recent controversy, and having previously posted an article which explains there are different opinions on the charismatic vs cessationist spectrum, as well as my old series on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, I thought that I should simply share the most relevant Bible verses cited by people regarding this discussion. I encourage you whatever your viewpoint to approach the Bible open for God to speak to you through these verses, and perhaps even change your mind.  Today I share the OT … [Read more...]

John Stott on non-authoritative NT prophecy

1482186_10151780081126569_159557811_n

As far as I know John Stott was a cessationist through and through.  This makes his attached statement about  New Testament prophecy all the more credible and significant. It is worthy of our consideration because what is happening here is that a good biblical scholar is allowing the Bible to take him in the direction of something that could potentially undermine his position.  We all do well to approach the Bible with a similar reverence.Of course there are degrees of charismaticism and ce … [Read more...]

Premier’s Unbelievable? with Adrian Warnock and Doug Wilson on Strange Fire

DougWilson11

Earlier today Premier Christian Radio broadcast a conversation between me and cessationist Doug Wilson. It wasn't really a debate, still less an argument, more a discussion between two brothers who happen to disagree. Justin Brierley did his usual fantastic job of moderating. At one point we both conceded defeat! Anyway, I would encourage you to have a listen and to whet your appetite here is a couple of quotes from Doug in response to the comments MacArthur has made that have led some to … [Read more...]
