What the Corinthian letters have to say about the charismatic gifts

Of course for many charismatics 1 and 2 Corinthians are among their favorite books of the Bible. If I may be allowed to make one comment as I introduce these verses, it would be instead to ask two questions. If these verses do not apply to us today, why are they in the Bible?  And, on what basis can we determine which other verses also do not apply to us?  I have already posted verses that speak to this matter from Acts, the Gospels, and the OT. I give thanks to my God always for you because … [Read more...]

Reformed support for Baptism with the Spirit

A friend of mine has recently published a free short e-book “The Promise of the Spirit: A Reformed View” by Peter Garner. This is available to download now. It is a very helpful read, and contains such gems as these: "To be born of the Spirit is one thing; to be baptized in the spirit is quite another. Moreover we should notice that the new birth is described in terms which mark out the Spirit as the Author leading to Jesus as the object of faith, whereas Spirit-baptism is by Jesus … [Read more...]

A readers experience of God – seeking God with hunger is the key

Tanya Marlow was kind enough to allow me to post this email she sent me in response to my post about experiencing God. If you don't already, follow her on Twitter. OH wow. I don't really know where to begin... I was so moved by this post.  I think you're right - at least in the Christian circle that I move in - we rarely speak of our experiences of God.  It is safe and easy to talk of our thoughts about God and teach others of His Word - sharing our relationship with God is more vulnerable. … [Read more...]

I don't just believe in God, I met with him this morning

We Christians today don't often talk about our spiritual experiences. There are all kinds of valid reasons for that.  However, as the following section of my book Raised With Christ shows, Packer and the Puritans disagree with us.  Now when Packer and the Puritans would seek to correct us, we should sit up and at least take note: It is remarkable how infrequently experiences such as those described below are mentioned, either during preaching or in modern Christian books. Unfortunately, many … [Read more...]

How Charismatic are YOU? A Spectrum of belief and practice

Today, in the tradition of my previous Arminocalvinist Spectrum, Evolution vs Creationism Spectrum and Spectrum of belief on hell and salvation  I present a "Charismatic-cessationist spectrum."  For some more background on this issue, and a fairly typical charismatic perspective see my series of posts on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.  As usual this may be a bit of a living document for a couple of days as I welcome suggestions for improvement from others. Intriguingly this spectrum … [Read more...]

The Holy Spirit as Evidence of our Salvation « Scholarship in the Glory

I just had to share this quote with you, do pop by the blog I found it on to read the rest of the article.  The writer is speaking about a verse in 1 John which says essentially that the Holy Spirit is directly involved in giving us assurance of salvation.  There is some similar material in my book Raised With Christ, but to be honest, I think this guy says it more clearly than I did here, and much as I know many of my loyal readers would disagree, I am not ashamed to nail my colors to the … [Read more...]

In this final part of the interview we discuss Baptism with the Holy Spirit: Jack Hayford Interview - Part Three from Adrian Warnock on Vimeo. By now you should hopefully be able to watch the sessions from the recent 300 Leaders conference where Dr. Hayford was the speaker and book into our next event with Terry Virgo. … [Read more...]

More on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit from Terry Virgo

Today Terry continues to argue for the Baptism with the Spirit as a distinct experience (though one that can happen on the day of someones conversion). He was asked about people who feel that they have received all that there is of the Spirit at conversion: "I have read so much of Martyn Lloyd-Jones that his answer comes to me, if you have got it where is it? . . The coming of the Holy Spirit on people was so transforming. Even JEsus himself was anointed of the Holy Spirit. . . There is plenty … [Read more...]

Baptism in the Holy Spirit by Terry Virgo

You know how it works. Here are some extracts to whet your appetite, followed by another video of Terry Virgo. This time he is speaking about the importance he places on a clear, distinct experience of baptism with the Holy Spirit: "I remember reading Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones who said that receiving the Spirit is different to conversion, and then read John Stott who said the Baptism with the Spirit is conversion. I thought I honor both of these men so massively, so if they disagree who am I to … [Read more...]

Grabbers of the impossible

It is interesting to me how many great pioneers of the past believed in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as something that is needed, subsequent to conversion, to empower the believer for works of service. One example of this is seen in the following quote from C.T. Studd (see also for example, Lloyd-Jones on Baptism with the Holy Spirit). “The fiery baptism of the Holy Ghost will change soft, sleek Christians into hot, lively heroes for Christ, who will advance and fight and die, but not … [Read more...]
