Strange Fire: Mark Driscoll open letter to John MacArthur

There has been an interesting twist to the Strange Fire controversy and the side-show which is Mark Driscoll vs John MacArthur. In an open letter, Driscoll has challenged MacArthur to a duel I mean genial discussion with himself or Wayne Grudem at his Resurgence Conference. The Strange Fire conference felt like one group in the Church erecting a large wall, and then yelling over the top of at it at another group. If they really want to help the Global Church, Grace To You must look for ways … [Read more...]

Strange Fire: Every biblical argument refuted

Today I realised I was at a crossroads. I could either decide I have said enough in my post Strange Fire, a Charismatic Response among others, and walk away from the current controversy, or I could determine to address it more thoroughly. There is always, as R.C. Sproul Jr points out, a tension between truth and unity. The Bible does tell us to stay away from divisive people (Titus 3:10), and it may well come to that at some point. But, I have always had such a lot of respect for John MacArthur … [Read more...]

Strange Fire: Radio MP3 and Questions for cessationists

The MP3 of the radio chat I had yesterday is available. It is in two segments Michael Brown speaks first to Phil Johnson and then to myself and Sam Storms. I think that it should make interesting reading. During the chat I posed four questions for cessationists that I think help to determine whether you are a moderate cessationist, or one who doesn't accept any experiences of God as valid. I explain in my book that a vibrant sense of a relationship with God was once very broadly accepted. … [Read more...]

Strange Fire: National Radio program with Phil Johnson, Sam Storms and Myself

The Strange Fire Conference continues to generate a lot of interest and discussion online. My main response can be found at Strange Fire - a charismatic response. Today, from 2pm to 4pm EST (7pm-9pm UK time) this will be the focus of  on Michael L Brown's nationally syndicated radio show, coincidentally called The Line of Fire.  The guest during the first hour of the show will be MacArthur's right hand man,  Phil_Johnson.   I should be overlapping with Phil around a quarter to 3pm EST … [Read more...]

Strange Fire: John MacArthur claims no good has come out of the Charismatic Movement

20131016-200530.jpg

I've just listened to most of the first session of the Strange Fire Conference. My connection was spotty, so I missed some of it. I know that wisdom would probably dictate that I should wait, listen to it all, even read his book, then respond to it as a whole. But, my brothers have just been insulted. How can I not rise to their defence immediately? As I suspected there was no attempt to demonstrate from Scripture that the charismatic view of matters like prophecy was wrong. MacArthur did … [Read more...]

Why cessationists are wrong about prophecy

Later today the Strange Fire conference hosted by John MacArthur begins. A few weeks back I expressed my concern about some of the publicity for this event seeming to accuse all charismatics of being blasphemers. This event also prompted Terry Virgo to share a video about how Lloyd-Jones encouraged him as a young charismatic. I will be watching at least some of the event online. But one thing I am not expecting to hear is a novel or convincing argument from Scripture. I just want to state … [Read more...]

To live is Christ, to die is gain

20131011-082441.jpg

I am very grateful to God that, despite Mat Chandler's brain cancer diagnosis, God has spared him for the sake of his family, and for more service. I will never forget him preaching at Jubilee Church still with a closely cropped head of hair because of chemotherapy. He explained to us then that he will never be free of what is effectively a sword hanging over his head. He lives each day as a man who may die tomorrow. Yet with a steely gaze, staring down the congregation as though we were … [Read more...]

You can change: True salvation

The above video was preached by Tope Koleoso this past week at Jubilee Church in Enfield and Wood Green. It was one of the most convicting yet grace-filled messages I have ever heard. This is the gospel. It is a great sermon for everybody to listen to in order to help you to distinguish in your own life the difference between as he put it "Some kind of response to the gospel vs being born again." Tope referred to two Scriptures that should cause all of us to sit up and listen: Examine … [Read more...]

New Evolution vs God video: Ray Comfort dialogues with Scientists

Christians do have a variety of opinions about Evolution. But there is no doubt that for many younger non-believers faith in Evolution without any trace of a creator is a primary objection to the gospel. In this video, Ray Comfort dialogues with Science majors and their professors. Their reaction to the preaching of the gospel towards the end of this video is priceless. The whole video is very impacting, no matter what you believe about God, the gospel or evolution. I encourage you to watch it … [Read more...]
