How Pain Helps Us Understand the Real God

Nancy Guthrie lost two of her three children. No wonder she is not easily satisfied with platitudes about God.  She has put together Be Still My Soul: Embracing God’s Purpose and Provision in Suffering, a collection of writings from old and new authors designed to help us come to terms with pain as believers.I plan on dipping into this book myself, as if this extract is anything to go by, it is going to be worthwhile. We should not wait until we face major trauma to tackle what we think about s … [Read more...]

Two Books On Ruth By John Piper

The man is a dynamo. Knowing as I now do how much heartache and mental effort can go into just one book, the many volumes that Piper has produced are a monumental achievement. Most of us find it hard to even keep up with reading all of them. They are all good, but some of his works stand out as exceptional. I believe that his book on Ruth called A Sweet and Bitter Providence (Crossway, 2010) is one that it is important you do not miss. Piper crams a lot of teaching into a short book, which also … [Read more...]

"You Don't Need Me Here" – John Piper

John Piper preached from Romans 8 for The Village Church recently while Matt Chandler was recovering from surgery.  I loved the way he began his sermon by stating that, having listened to recent talks by other pastors in the church, he was confident that the church did not really need Piper to help them deal with the challenges they currently face.  One of the best marks of a truly great leader is their ability to raise other leaders. Chandler has clearly passed that test.  No wonder Piper said … [Read more...]

Matt Chandler Video Blog

Chandler has made a clear decision to deal with his cancer in public rather than in private. This means allowing the church he leads and others to see what God is doing through his experience.  This week he has started a video blog which will be shared each week at The Village Church blog. … [Read more...]

When One Of God's Daughters Is Crushed On The Road

Mark Driscoll told Angela’s story in a recent sermon. You can watch the video below. I guarantee it will move you. May her life preach to thousands she will never meet. When life really gets tough, more than at any other time, Christians can demonstrate to the world that it really IS all about Jesus. Read more on the Mars Hill Blog. … [Read more...]

The Immediately Present Help

I know, I know — I'm supposed to be on a blogging break! But last night's news about David Wayne was weighing on me this morning, and then I saw in my inbox this from Spurgeon's Faith Checkbook devotion. It lifted me as only God's Word can. May God be immediately present to you this Christmas!God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).A help that is not present when we need it is of small value. The anchor which is left at home is of no use to the seaman in the h … [Read more...]

Jollyblogger Has Cancer, Please Pray

UPDATE December 24, 2008Yesterday David learned that his cancer has spread to his liver and lungs. He has surgery scheduled for today and chemotherapy starting thereafter. Not an easy Christmas for the Waynes, but I was able to speak to him on the phone yesterday and he sounded in good heart. He said that since his announcement, he had been consciously aware of the prayers of bloggers upholding him.---------I know I had planned to not write anything further on my blog this Christmas season. But … [Read more...]

Battling Bitterness During Tough Times

This from Terry Virgo's blog: When you go through hard times, bitterness is waiting at the door, offering you fellowship. ‘What a terrible time you’ve had,’ it says. ‘How cruel they’ve been! How unjustly you’ve been treated.’ But bitterness isn’t a friendly companion; it’s a vile weed which puts its roots down deep into people’s personalities. Not content to disfigure just one soul, it grows up searching for others who might be willing to draw near. If you yield to its offer of companionship, a r … [Read more...]

SERMON – Living to Know Jesus (Philippians 3)

Yesterday I preached at Jubilee and thought, as usual, that I would share my notes and the audio here. But before I get to that, since it's Monday and my habit in "normal" times is to share a quote with you from Doctor Martyn Lloyd-Jones, this quote is a good one to begin with as, in many ways, it sets the scene for what I was preaching on. "What should we be seeking? We should always be seeking the Lord Jesus Christ himself, to know him, and know his love and to be witnesses for him and to … [Read more...]
