Why is informality a value to treasure in church life? Interview with Terry Virgo

Today's video with Terry Virgo moves onto the fifth of seventeen values that have shaped his ministry for decades. These values are expressed as the kind of church he aims to plant: “A church where God’s presence is prized and where God is enthusiastically worshipped with genuine freedom for men and women to worship publicly in the Holy Spirit, to use spiritual gifts and to participate in ‘body ministry’ ” Here are some extracts from the video, followed by the video itself:"Church is people … [Read more...]

Why do we gather for prayer and fasting?

As you read this I will be at the Newfrontiers Prayer and Fasting gathering. This event is quite unusual, and few movements have something that replicates it. Matt Chandler seemed quite impacted by his visit last year to this event. Anyone who wants to understand Newfrontiers would be well-advised to make a priority of attending one of these events. Why do 800 leaders gather for two days, forgo food and devote themselves to praying earnestly for God to act? Because we believe it is only God … [Read more...]

Mobilise USA begins

So they not only let me into the country, they also let me into the students and twenties conference! Back home in the UK I am routinely banned from going to students and twenties events, even when they call it twenties PLUS as our guys back at Jubilee London do. I suppose that as I do actually turn 40 in just a couple of months, I should not be surprised. Shh...don't tell my American friends or they might throw me out! Gonna feel a bit old over the next few days, unless I just pretend to be … [Read more...]

A year on, and a return to the other country

I have had the pleasure of traveling fairly widely thanks to my job. I travel so often, and at times for such short periods, that I don't always mention on the blog when I am away. But there is one country that I tend to look forward to visiting more than almost any other. I am of course talking about the USA, often referred to affectionately by us Brits as "the other country".I look forward to my trips to the USA because I feel so at home there. I have so many friends there, and so many … [Read more...]

Valuing Grace by Terry Virgo Part Two

This is the second of Terry's videos on his value of grace. You know how it goes by now, here is an extract to make you want to watch the whole thing: "I recall that it was as though I saw a break in the cloud, and saw some blue sky. I suddenly felt that God loves me freely, but it wasn't enough to establish me, and I quickly went back to are you praying long enough, are you meditating on the Bible long enough, and these so-called "means of grace" became duties you have to fulfill. Am I doing … [Read more...]

Valuing Grace by Terry Virgo Part One

For the next couple of days I will be sharing from Terry Virgo's series of videos on the values he has based his ministry on. They are expressed in the format of what kind of church he is aiming to build when he works with others to plant. Terry Virgo on avoiding drift away from the Bible

I am continuing to enjoy the installments of Terry’s video series.  This segment talks about the various ways in which we can find ourselves drifting away from absolute Biblical truth.  I do encourage you to watch all these videos.  Here are some extracts from today's video:"In an endeavor to be relevant . . . not just quaint and supposedly out of date…it is possible to move away from the unchanging truth. It is important to hold to Scriptures relevance…we have to work hard to translate Bible … [Read more...]

Terry Virgo’s favorite preachers

In this installment of Terry's video series, his son asks him which preachers have influenced him and that he listens to. His answers (with reasons) were as follows:His first Baptist pastor Lloyd-Jones "a man obviously of the word, but also a man of the Spirit." Mark Driscolll "I am fascinated by his mind. He has so much background information and he has a huge passion" Tim Keller "An extraordinary preacher, not a word is wasted." John Piper "I have enjoyed enormously listening to … [Read more...]

How a reformed charismatic views preaching

Terry Virgo was asked in the following video "How can a preacher improve?" I will share a few highlights from this video then embed the video itself. If you haven't been following this excellent series, I commend them to you."One of the best ways to learn preaching is to listening to a good preacher""In my praying before I preach, I am asking God "lord please let people feel that their Father in heaven is speaking to them""You have got to be true to the Bible…you want to be clear…you … [Read more...]

Terry Virgo: Speak with confidence about the central things

Terry Virgo is continuing to share his series of video interviews with his son. Today I share here another video which addresses Terry's view of the Bible. Here is an extract from his words about things we must preach boldly and clearly: Present God in his person and character. Present Jesus without any disguise. We need the authentic Jesus. The fact that he is God and man. Be very clear about the trinity and these unchanging realities about God. People say he didn't actually rise from the … [Read more...]
