Spurgeon: Prayer is vital for the success of ministry

Regular readers will know only too well that I have been looking afresh recently at the life and writings of Spurgeon, in preparation for a planned documentary for which a team of my friends are currently seeking crowd-sourced funding.  Reading Spurgeon afresh, it has struck me again just how much he has to teach us. God seems to have uniquely gifted him with great insight into a broad range of subjects, as I am sure you have already seen in the quotes I have shared over on Desiring God about … [Read more...]

A personal note on the planned Spurgeon Documentary

permalink

I wanted to share a bit more about the Spurgeon documentary we are currently seeking crowd-sourced funding for. Our goal is simple: we want to introduce Spurgeon to a new generation and encourage people to find out more about him. If we cover our costs, then the documentary will be made, and will at some stage be made available to stream free online.  Making it will involve a group of us taking annual leave and filming at some of the key sites in Spurgeon's life what we hope will be a … [Read more...]

Faithfully Pursuing Fruitfulness

This is taken from a guest post I have written this morning on the Desiring God Blog: One key aspect in how we faithfully pursue fruitfulness is what we are hoping for. After last week’s post on Spurgeon, I was asked by someone which of his books I would recommend to begin with if they’ve never read him before. I am tempted to just say, Any of them! But perhaps that’s not a very helpful answer! If you are wrestling with this issue of what our goals in ministry should be, then The Soul … [Read more...]

Don’t read the Puritans, read Spurgeon!

This post was a guest post about Spurgeon, surprisingly enough given my current interest in him over at Desiring God's fabulous blog. If you don't read that blog already, I urge you to do so. I must confess to having slightly overstated my point in the title of this post. I rejoice in the recent resurgence of interest in the Puritans, who have so much to teach us. Perhaps a better way to capture the thought propelling this post would be “Use Spurgeon to Create a Bridge to the World of the … [Read more...]

“No God? I live in him!” Spurgeon’s divine experience

In this quote from Spurgeon he reveals a depth of spiritual experience that frankly surpasses that of the vast majority of Christians today, whether charismatic or cessationist. But surely we can and should all aspire to know something of the depths of experience he knew? "Beloved brethren and sisters in Christ, I think that you and I can say, that to us the surest fact in all the world is that there is a God. No God? I live in him. Tell a fish in the sea there is no water. No God? Tell a man … [Read more...]

Help us make a documentary on the life of Spurgeon

A few weeks ago, Steve McCaskell approached me with an interesting idea to crowd source funding for a full-length high-quality documentary on the life of Spurgeon. He had already raised almost $9,000 on his first crowd-source funding to support the publication of a book of Spurgeon quotes, Through the Eyes of Spurgeon. Crowd sourced funding is simply a way to take the financial risk out of big projects like manufacturing a new product, or in this case producing a film designed to inspire a … [Read more...]

Spurgeon’s last words from his last sermon

I thought I would share the following which constitute the final words of the final sermon Spurgeon ever preached.  There are many other sermons that were published later than this in the published volumes, as they kept publishing them after his death.  These are fitting words to close such a remarkable ministry: Was he not a good Lord when he first took us into his army of salvation? What a curious crew they were that enlisted under David! “Every one that was in debt, and every one that … [Read more...]

Facts about Spurgeon 121 years since his death

121 years ago today Spurgeon died. 100,000 people lined his funeral route to mourn the passing of one of the Victorian era's most significant public figures.  You could do a lot worse than signing up for a new email devotional that begins tomorrow which is a lightly edited version of one of his devotional books. It seems highly unlikely that Spurgeon will ever be surpassed either in his influence as a preacher, or in his unrivalled status as the most prolific and most-read christian author … [Read more...]

Spurgeon on receiving the whole counsel of God

How easy is it for us to become lop sided in our faith? The answer is very easy! One of the goals I have always had in blogging is to expose myself and others to people who might emphasize different aspects of the truth to us in order that we might grasp the full counsel of God.  It is this idea that lays behind some of my "spectrum" posts (see for example my Arminocalvinist, Complementarian-egalitarian, and Charismatic - cessationist posts) Sometimes it may even be necessary to LISTEN to … [Read more...]

Spurgeon e-mail devotional

I want to today introduce to my blog readership a new friend of mine, Stephen McCaskell.  We have a top secret project we are working on together that will be revealed shortly! Getting to know him I have been impressed with his entrepreneurial spirit, and his enthusiasm that a new generation should be introduced to the prince of preachers.  You can and should follow him on Twitter, join his Spurgeon Facebook page, read the Spurgeon quotes page he runs, as well as his new blog here on … [Read more...]
