Strange Fire – A Charismatic Response to John MacArthur

John-MacArthur

Christians have a long history of disagreeing with each other over doctrine. There is nothing new about that. Sometimes that disagreement can get quite heated. So for example, in the time when Wesley and Whitefield were arguing over Calvinism, Charles Wesley wrote a shameful hymn called "The Horrible Decree" which says of Calvinism: O HORRIBLE DECREE Worthy of whence it came! Forgive their hellish blasphemy And much more besides. As I concluded my post responding to MacArthur's first … [Read more...]

Strange Fire: John MacArthur claims no good has come out of the Charismatic Movement

20131016-200530.jpg

I've just listened to most of the first session of the Strange Fire Conference. My connection was spotty, so I missed some of it. I know that wisdom would probably dictate that I should wait, listen to it all, even read his book, then respond to it as a whole. But, my brothers have just been insulted. How can I not rise to their defence immediately? As I suspected there was no attempt to demonstrate from Scripture that the charismatic view of matters like prophecy was wrong. MacArthur did … [Read more...]

Jack Hayford on Jesus Washing His Disciples Feet – "One Moment In Time"

Jack Hayford visited Jubilee Church London to preach over the summer. He spoke from John 13, and so I thought I would share it with you here. Most poeple think verse 34 "love one another as I have loved you" is referring to Jesus death. But Jack here argues that surely it is more practically referring to this act of service. Jesus here laid aside symbols of prestige, position and status to serve. In the same way we ought to serve others in his Kingdom. We are called to tenderly care for each … [Read more...]

Working hard into your later years

Don Carson and John Piper turn 65 this year. One could forgive either of them for feeling they had pulled their weight and it was time to ease up. Neither of them seem to be minded to do so. And in their renewed determination to serve the body of Christ they have been goaded on by this email from one of their friends that I thought was worth sharing. There are a number of godly men today who are setting a similar example to youngsters like me in their mature years. (OK, so I know that to … [Read more...]

Jack Hayford at 300 Leaders Conference, Session 2

This is the second video from the recent 300 Leaders event with Jack Hayford followed by some rough notes I took: Keys of the kingdom This was not an assignment to Peter for what he would become nor a hierarchical system. Peter is a small stone, as opposed to the mighty rock on which Jesus builds his church. What he said establishes the foundation stone. He still builds his church using people who know who Jesus is. He is talking to them as a group about the plans he has. It’s the … [Read more...]

Jack Hayford at 300 Leaders: Spirit-Filled Leadership Session 1

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of listening to Jack Hayford at the 300 Leaders Conference. If you enjoyed this event, or the video you may want to book for our next one, where Terry Virgo is the speaker. Below is a video of Hayford's first session followed by some rough notes that I took: Hayford began by saying, "My calling card is that I am a pastor. I am a shepherd of the church of God. I didn't set out to be successful. I didn't set out to pastor a mega church, but I did set out … [Read more...]

Interview with Dr. Jack Hayford – Part One: Longevity in ministry

In this video with my pastor, Tope Koleoso, and Dr. Jack Hayford, I first ask Tope how he decides who to invite to the 300 Conference. I then ask why Dr. Hayford has not retired and how he chooses where to minister. We discuss longevity of ministry, the need to learn from others in different wings of the Body of Christ, and the importance of passing on to others what God has given to you. You will enjoy this informal conversation with a true father in our faith: By now you should … [Read more...]
