Matt Chandler at 300 leaders: None but Jesus

This is the first session of our recent 300 leaders conference with Matt Chandler. If you enjoy it, I am sure you would also enjoy being with us for Piper in just a few weeks. My notes from this session are beneath the video.Watch on vimeo or download the audio.Chandler took us to some verses from Matthew 28 that he said we should all be familiar with "or you probably shouldn't be a leader!" Matt explained that the idea of church building was easy to celebrate but getting there … [Read more...]

A Sentence can change your life

This post will explain why I am so keen to invite you to join us to hear John Piper live on 26th and/or 27th June, especially if you are already a leader or are thinking that God might be calling you to some leadership role in the church. The reason is very simple:  A single phrase anointed by the Holy Spirit might transform your life, and hence the life of the church you are in.  Tickets are disappearing fast, so book now!  The following is an excerpt from a John Piper sermon: I have often he … [Read more...]

Hear John Piper Live in London

On June 26th John Piper will be the speaker at our second "300 Leaders" event here in London. You will want to book in now at the site if you are a church leader of any level, or a potential one. We are expecting tickets to sell out very quickly.Piper will also be preaching at Jubilee Church in North London at 10 AM the next day. This will be following his speaking engagement at the EMA (where he is speaking on the Holy Spirit). I understand a few places are left and I am gutted that I will … [Read more...]

Wayne Grudem on the Atonement, unity, Rick Warren, and John Piper

This second installment of my interview with Wayne was quite far reaching. We spoke about the atonement and how he decides what kind of people to have fellowship with. He even had a comment on the recent controversy over Rick Warren and John Piper.Watch on VimeoHow important do you think some of the recent realignments over doctrinal matters we have seen recently in the Church are? It’s why I am here. It was to affirm the need for drawing boundaries on doctrinal matters that I c … [Read more...]

Unity in diversity – Rick Warren, John Piper, and New Word Alive

It seems that the Christian world is in flux right now.  Old alliances have already dissolved. New ones are being forged.  But still there is some uneasiness in many. Unexpected events can suddenly seem to threaten to bring this new house crashing down as if it was made of cards.  How do we determine who we are going to associate with?  How do we decide who to listen to?  Now that many conferences do not seem to exclusively invite speakers from their own background, how can we predict who will be … [Read more...]

John Piper on why he invited Rick Warren to speak at the DGM conference

UPDATE - I have now written more about why I think John Piper was right to invite Rick Warren.A few months ago I posted on "why I love Rick Warren" and I have been impressed by his Twitter feed ever since. So it was a real delight to hear that having met up with Warren at a funeral and discovered he loves Jonathan Edwards, among other things they share, Piper has invited him to speak at his conference. One thing I love about Piper is his willingness to make invitations like this that raise … [Read more...]

John Piper taking eight-month break from ministry

It was announced yesterday that from May 1 to December 31 John Piper will be taking a step back from his ministry for a prolonged period to refocus his priorities. I respect and admire the humility, honesty, and commitment this represents. No one, not even Piper, is indispensable to God's mission. But every husband is irreplaceable to his wife. This was also well explained in the second half of yesterday's sermon, the video of which is below. I recommend you watch the whole video as this is a … [Read more...]

Two Books On Ruth By John Piper

The man is a dynamo. Knowing as I now do how much heartache and mental effort can go into just one book, the many volumes that Piper has produced are a monumental achievement. Most of us find it hard to even keep up with reading all of them. They are all good, but some of his works stand out as exceptional. I believe that his book on Ruth called A Sweet and Bitter Providence (Crossway, 2010) is one that it is important you do not miss. Piper crams a lot of teaching into a short book, which also … [Read more...]

Pastors Conference Day Two

A full day of further incredibly helpful and much needed pummeling about joy would be a good way to sum up today.  Worship continued to be meaningful and full of the presence of the Spirit.  The talks continue to be posted on the Desiring God site so you can read full notes, watch, and listen to them there.Eric Mason is a very gifted preacher. He spoke about having written a Ph.D thesis on how suffering helps our sanctification. He shared how then God had required him to live in the good of it … [Read more...]

My Travel Journal – Bethlehem Baptist Church

Usually when I attend a conference, I sit through the sessions typing furiously trying to capture as much of what God is saying to us through his Word as I possibly can. This is not an easy task, but it is one I enjoy. It is something I am sure I will do many times over the next few years, as I have no intention of stopping. However, preaching is not about making the process of transferring information from the speaker's notes to the hearers' notes as efficient as possible. We are meant to … [Read more...]
