VIDEO – My Jesus, My Savior on American Idol

In the category of surprising and bizarre things I missed hearing about while I was at New Word Alive last week is this video clip taken from YouTube. It seems that the last eight contestants on American Idol sang this song on two consecutive nights, changing "My Jesus" to "My Shepherd" on the first night. Josh Harris fills us in on the details, but here is the video of the group singing the song with the correct words on the second night. My jaw is dropping to the floor!Josh then … [Read more...]

Facebook or Courtbook From the Man Who Kissed Facebook Goodbye

So, although Josh Harris has kissed Facebook goodbye, he has this to say to the rest of us, especially singles:Enjoy Facebook. And if you're a godly single man, receive it as a gift from God to assist you in nonchalantly building a friendship with a godly Christian woman. I'm serious, men! If you're mature enough to pursue marriage, Facebook should be "Courtbook" for you. Don't just sit there, get on the ball and go "poke" a godly girl. … [Read more...]

The Risks and Rewards of Using Technology in Sermon Preparation

Note: I originally wrote this article for www.sermoncentral.com where it appeared on February 26, 2007.__________________________________________________Technology helps me in both my sermon preparation and in my personal devotional life. By technology, I’m referring specifically to the Internet and Bible software. I love it and have no apology for using it to discover insights from God’s Word and to improve the quality of my preaching.People have three different reactions when I talk to them abo … [Read more...]

DG06 – When Josh Harris Was Glad He Wasn't Mark Driscoll

Josh Harris reports from one of the discussion sessions - his whole post is great, but what stuck out for me was what he had to say about Driscoll:"Moment I Was Most Glad Not to Be Mark Driscoll: When John Piper gave warm pastoral adjustment and correction to him while he wasn’t there. I thought Driscoll carried himself really well at the conference. God is doing so much through this man. This weekend Mars Hill celebrates it's ten-year anniversary. Praise God! I love his courage, his passion for … [Read more...]

TRAVEL DIARY – Visiting Covenant Life Church

Having visited this church on Sunday, I can see why C.J. frequently describes his home church as "the dearest place on earth." Somehow I suspect if I, too, had been a part of this church for decades, then I would feel the same way. It was a real joy just to be able to pose as "guests" on a fairly typical Sunday morning, and even get to observe some baptisms.I know some of you will want to know what the church was like. Well, it is hard to put into words. What I can say is that their … [Read more...]

What is C.J. Mahaney?

Mark Dever asks over at the T4G Blog, "What is C.J.?" The question, no doubt, relates to C.J. having handed over his senior pastor role to Josh Harris. Having seen a little of his public persona, and having had the pleasure of interviewing C.J. over e-mail, I am willing to bet he will be hesitant to answer - so I am going to do so for him - not that I am trying to speak on his behalf!Over at the Covenant Life Church website, C.J. is still listed as one of the pastors. Both this page, and also a … [Read more...]

Preparing a Sermon (with John Stott and Josh Harris)

Josh Harris has a great post on sermon preparation:"Call the congregation to act! Our expectation as the sermon comes to an end, is not merely that people will understand or remember or enjoy our teaching, but that they will do something about it. If there is no summons, there is no sermon! The precise application of your sermon depends on the character of the text. The dominant thought points us to how people should act in response. Does the text call to repentance or stimulate faith? Does it … [Read more...]
