MLJ Monday – Speaking the Truth in Love (T4G Article III )

This post is part of an attempt to bring Doctor Martyn Lloyd-Jones along for the ride, blogging through the Together for the Gospel statement. So far I have posted from the Doctor's writings on The Introduction and Articles 1 and 2 . I have also posted myself on the Introduction as well as a combined post on Articles I and II. If you haven't already done so, I would encourage you to read the statement in full - it is available as a pdf or Google's HTML version. This post is part of an ongoing … [Read more...]

Who Killed Jesus? The Doctor says, "It was God who did it."

Although some may think I am standing alone, in fact Martyn Lloyd-Jones stands with me. In the following excerpt from Great Doctrines of the Bible, after having spent the previous chapter discussing various false theories of the atonement, he makes the following statement, which he considers to be of primary importance:. . . I still want to go on to a final statement or proposition and, in many ways I think that this is the most important of all. There are a number of statements which emphasize … [Read more...]

Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday – Is the Bible Totally Trustworthy?

T4G Article II"We affirm that the authority and sufficiency of Scripture extends to the entire Bible, and therefore that the Bible is our final authority for all doctrine and practice. We deny that any portion of the Bible is to be used in an effort to deny the truthfulness or trustworthiness of any other portion. We further deny any effort to identify a canon within the canon or, for example, to set the words of Jesus against the writings of Paul."_____________________________Today I want to … [Read more...]

Kauflin Quotes the Doctor

Bob Kauflin has a great post inspired by MLJ - Pursuing God's Active Presence:"However, I'm sobered and challenged by Lloyd-Jones question: 'Do we really believe that God can still act?' He is asking if we have faith for God to move among us in clear, distinct, and powerful ways. He is asking us to consider if we are settling for an 'appearance of godliness, but denying its power?' (2 Tim. 3:5) At the end of the day, are we placing more trust in God's activity or ours? I find that I can still … [Read more...]

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday: Was the Doctor a Charismatic?

In last week's final chapter of the Doctor's exposition of Ephesians 1:13, I said that I would quote MLJ's own experience, which occurred in the summer of 1949, and which Iain Murray refers to as one of the most remarkable [years] in Dr. Lloyd-Jones life. The following excerpt is from his biography, David Martyn-Lloyd-Jones The Fight of Faith 1939-1981, The Banner of Truth Trust, Edinburgh, The University Press, Cambridge, 1990, "Wales and the Summer of 1949, pp. 207-221. Following Murray's … [Read more...]

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday – Sealing With the Spirit: Some Further Thoughts

In this week's MLJ Monday post, Dr. Lloyd-Jones addresses some final questions regarding the sealing. Next week, in our concluding post on this subject, I will share from the pages of Iain Murray's biography, one of the Doctor's own experiences - an experience of which he never spoke publically, and only seldom in private, but which I feel will be a great encouragement to you as a reader of this blog.Today, the Doctor begins his final exposition of Ephesians 1:13 in this way:"All who have ever … [Read more...]

Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday – What the Doctor Would Have Thought of "Together for the Gospel"

This Monday I want to share a short quote from one of the Doctor's greatest books, Preaching and Preachers: My reason for preaching, writes the Doctor, "is that to me the work of preaching is the highest and the greatest and the most glorious calling to which anyone can ever be called. If you want something in addition to that I would say without hesitation that the most urgent need in the Christian Church is true preaching; and as it is the greatest and the most urgent need in the Church, it … [Read more...]

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday–A Dead Man Answers C. J. Mahaney!

The plan at the moment is to return to the Sealed with the Spirit quotes next week, but for now let's allow MLJ to reply to C. J. Mahaney's question What is the gospel? The Doctor does seem to agree with Mohler that in a sense the gospel is simple, and in another it is incomprehensible, but what strikes me about these quotes is the stress on the RESULTS of the gospel in our lives. Letting the gospel do its work before we fully understand it sounds like a very sensible approach, especially as, … [Read more...]

MLJ MondayOur Only Boast: the Cross of Christ!

Id like to take a short break from Lloyd-Jones exposition of Ephesians 1:13 this week and instead, as we look ahead to Good Friday and all the crucifixion signifies, focus on quotes regarding the cross of Christ. Here are some taken from the Doctor's devotional, Walking with God Day by Day.But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Galatians 6:14)The preaching of the cross of Christ was the very center and heart of the message of the apostles, and there is … [Read more...]
