MLJ Monday: Sealed with the Spirit-Part 3

'In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. (Ephesians 1:13)* * * * * * *First, let's summarize the points Lloyd-Jones has made in our previous posts:(1) One cannot be a Christian unless the Holy Spirit is in him. (1 Corinthians 12:3, Romans 8:9).(2) Sealing means that which authenticates us as sons of God. (It doesn't make us sons.)(3) Sealing goes beyond our … [Read more...]

MLJ Monday – Sealed with the Spirit – Eph 1

Today I begin a new tradition inspired by the Pyro's Spurgeon on Monday series. I loved what they said about this week's Spurgeon quote towards the end of their post:Study any era of revival or the style of any great preacher and you will discover that boldness and clarity were their hallmarks — never qualities like vagueness, ambivalence, hesitation, wavering, apprehension, a cloudy message, fickle opinions, obsessive self-criticism, or any of the other qualities postmodernism falsely equates w … [Read more...]

Time to acknowledge my helpers and announcing MLJ Monday

I thought today that it was about time I recognised publicly 2 people who have been behind the scenes in the last couple of weeks helping me with this blog. I now have two unpaid "Research Assistants" who are proving to be worth at least evey penny I have paid them! OK, they are worth a lot more than that! The first of these two noble helpers should be well known to most of you - the author of a great Reformed Charismatic blog Paul Schafer is an all round good bloke whos serious addiction to … [Read more...]

2000 posts and a big thank you to The Doctor

This is the 2000th post on this blog, which means that I have been posting on average just short of two posts a day for almost three years. That's a whole lot of words one relatively recent reader has set out on a quest to go back and read 'em all. I am not sure that too many will want to join him!As I drew near to this post, I wondered how best to use it. I briefly considered a review post like I did at the end of 2005 and 2004. I also thought about doing a post on what blogging has meant to … [Read more...]

An open letter to Dotun, a young preacher

Over at Brosdee's view my dear friend Dotun has a post which opens a chink into the heart of a truly great preacher who as a young man is learning to preach in my view amazingly well at a great rate of knots! As CJ Mahaney points out true greatness lies in great humility, and so Dotun in his post is rightly hesitant to recognize his own gifting in preaching. Here is my comment to him that I put on his blog:Dear Dotun,Let others be the judge of whether you are a good preacher or not. I know that … [Read more...]

Assorted thoughts on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit

This post is a gathering into one place of as many thoughts, verses and quotes on the Holy Spirit as I can find from my blog. I have posted much if not all of this before but here it all is together....Just to kick of with, I believe that the HS is given:1. To assure us of salvation2. To empower us to live godly lives since, "PRINT ON A PAGE CAN NEVER MAKE US HOLY ON ITS OWN."3. To make us more evangelistic (cf the boldness of Acts 2) 4. To give us giftsGal 3:13ff Christ redeemed us from the … [Read more...]

Martyn Lloyd-Jones, hearing from God and the charismatics…

Many cessationists would own the Doctor (one of the English speaking world's greatest examples of a preacher) as their own. Yes, he was skeptical of much of what goes on in the charismatic movement- but to be honest in some circles so am I!In this quote he seems to imply that what I have called the 'extreme cessationist' position is a relatively new one in the church. He rebuts this strongly and this is classic Lloyd-Jones on the need for the empowering of the Holy Spirit. There are a significant … [Read more...]
