Worship at the Lakeland, Florida 'Revival Meetings'

Yesterday I spoke about my reaction to the little I know about what has been going on in meetings run by Todd Bentley in Lakeland, Florida. Today I begin a special report brought to us by my dear friend, Jesse Phillips, who is a Sovereign Grace pastor in the Florida area. He visited the meetings himself one evening. The following is his unabridged report.*************************The thing I was immediately impressed with as we showed up, and throughout the whole night, was the overwhelming sense … [Read more...]

Todd Bentley and the Lakeland, Florida 'Revival Meetings'

UPDATE - Todd Bentley has now stepped down from ministry after separating from his wife.UPDATE - I have now also published a number of other posts on Todd BentleyI have had a number of people ask me about events which are gaining a lot of attention at the moment. In the UK, a series of ‘revival’ meetings being run in Lakeland, Florida by evangelist Todd Bentley are being shown daily on God TV.Before I get into that, however, apparently British satellite TV now carries ten stations devoted to no … [Read more...]

VIDEO INTERVIEW – John Piper On New Word Alive and Spring Harvest

UPDATE The written transcript of this video is now available and can be accessed here.At the recent New Word Alive conference I was able to record a four-part interview with John Piper. John rarely gives interviews of any form, so it was a real privilege, and one that I hope you will enjoy.Dr. Piper asked that we begin with prayer. His humble request of God that, for the sake of others, he would help us in our conversation was no mere lifeless routine. Here is a man who oozes the … [Read more...]

One Reason We Celebrate Mother’s Day

For some reason, in the UK we celebrate Mother's Day in March. Actually, this morning I was surprised to be able to attend a church in the European city I am visiting at the moment. There they celebrated Mother's Day, as well as Pentecost. The sermon was like a clear trumpet note for the type of experiential Chrisitanity I long for each of us to grow in. At the end, I had the opportunity to share that it seemed to me God was putting a bright future before the church and saying if they would … [Read more...]

Martyn Lloyd-Jones Monday – A Shortage of Joy

I want to share with you today a quote that I first put on this blog back in 2006. It is a quote which came towards the end of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones' life. It helps explain why his monumental series of sermons on Romans, which is available in mp3 and book form, stops at Romans 14:7. The Doctor was taken into hospital for emergency surgery due to bowel cancer after preaching the second of what was to be three sermons on this verse. The Doctor recovered sufficiently to live another twelve years, … [Read more...]

Three Women Healed in Different Ways

I want to share three stories with you. The first happened right here at our home church. A woman who had previously had a melanoma removed was told, following a scan, that her cancer had returned, I believe in three places. I know this lady personally. We prayed. Following that, the doctors were unable to find the lump in her neck; it seemed to have disappeared and so could not be biopsied. That caused some consternation to the doctors. They then removed another lump, which actually seemed … [Read more...]

ASK A BLOGGER – What Will the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Mean To Me?

Today we come to the sixth question that my e-mail correspondent asked:What will all this mean for me—will I have to stop being a conservative reformed believer? If not, what do people like me do differently after we receive the baptism of the Spirit in our churches? In answer to your first question, of course not! There are an increasing number of people who hold to both reformed theology and an experience of the Holy Spirit. Some do this while still calling themselves cessationists, and there a … [Read more...]

Holy Spirit Baptism – Subsequence Defended

Jesse Phillips has kindly given me permission to share here an article he wrote on what he calls subsequence. This is the notion, as I prefer to describe it, that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is distinct to conversion. I prefer to describe this as distinct for the simple reason that the receiving of the Holy Sprit need not be delayed for months or years after conversion. This may sound like a minor point, but it is crucial to our expectations. Anyway, I loved what Jesse said about Peter's … [Read more...]

ASK A BLOGGER – How Do I Know if I am Spirit Baptized?

On Thursday we began a series looking at several questions asked by an e-mail correspondent of mine. Today I will address his second question:Does baptism by the Holy Spirit have to be accompanied by tongues? Does it have to be by the laying on of hands? How do you know that you have been baptized in the Spirit?I will take these in reverse order. The last one is, in some ways, the easiest, although it is more difficult to put into words. It is like asking, “How do you know you are in love?” or “H … [Read more...]

PIPER FRIDAY – John Piper on the Baptism With the Holy Spirit

Last Friday I shared a quote from John Piper on the baptism with the Holy Spirit. In it he quoted an illustration that Martyn Lloyd-Jones used. Today, partly because I am working through a series of questions a reader has posed, I thought I would share another quote from Dr. Piper which might surprise some of my readers. "I would start by saying that in the book of Acts, everywhere the receiving of the Holy Spirit is described, it is experiential. What I mean is that it's not just a logical … [Read more...]
