Of Tone, Discernment, and the Charismatic Question

Phil Johnson has a second post answering my two-paragraph criticism of him. My schedule does not permit me to make a full reply as I am traveling on business. (All the posts you will see for the next few days were written before I left.) All I will say in reply, therefore, is this: Thank you, Phil, for sounding a much more conciliatory tone and for the acknowledgement that these issues are less important than the core of the Gospel, in which we both continue to delight in being united. You … [Read more...]

Prayer, Preaching, and the Anointing of the Spirit

Over at Unashamed Workmen, there are a number of great quotes on the vital place of prayer in preaching. The one that really stood out was in the comments section. I think this quote expresses perfectly why we need to plead with the resurrected Jesus to pour out his Spirit on us before we dare think of preaching: “This divine unction is the one distinguishing feature that separates true gospel preaching from all other methods of presenting truth. It backs and interpenetrates the revealed truth w … [Read more...]

Theology For All – An Interview with Mark Dever

On Saturday, September 22nd I attended the Theology For All Conference in central London at which Mark Dever spoke. To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive about attending as I wondered if I would be the only charismatic in attendance. Since the concept of Together for the Gospel hasn't really crossed the Atlantic, I almost felt like an interloper. It was great then to arrive and to feel so welcomed by a good number of my readers who were also attending. It still surprises and pleases me when I … [Read more...]

PIPER FRIDAY – Suffering and Healing

I'm back, but tired, and as usual, when I simply don't have anything to say myself and it's getting to the end of the week, I turn to one of the greatest living preachers—John Piper. Last Friday I quoted from his first talk in a series on suffering. Today I will quote from the second. It is striking how boldly he states that he believes in healing today, but in a context where this world in which we live is one in which we groan for heaven. God’s Ordinary Way Today: PartiallyDon’t misunderstand: … [Read more...]

BOOK – Sane Spirituality by Stuart Bell

This book started life as a series of sermons. It is an encouragement to me to see that publishers seem to be reviving the sermon-book, which at one point looked to me like it was fading from use. Bell's book is definitely aimed at the popular market, but any reader can learn much from what he has to say. If you are interested in how a charismatic interprets and applies 1 Corinthians, then this is a good place to start. He has a simple definition of charismatics which he has borrowed from … [Read more...]

Rediscovering Theopedia

I have spent a bit of time over the last few days rediscovering Theopedia. It is not quite so frenetic and unstructured as Wikkipedia. This is probably due to its requirement that you acknowledge a statement of faith and be registered before editing items. They are keen for more contributors and if you have good quality material you have blogged and are willing to adapt, they are happy for it to be included in their articles with the appropriate acknowledgments. Would be great to have a few more … [Read more...]

I DON'T WANT BALANCE, I WANT IT ALL!

UPDATE In January 2008, the following post was identified as the 10th all-time most popular post with readers of this blog. The 11th most-read post was The Atonement—Wright Attacks Both Sides of the Debate.Of all the posts I have written, this one is probably my own personal favorite. It is a rallying call to a kind of Christianity that is not ashamed to embrace the best from many different backgrounds.***************The last four words of the above title are not new to me, but they are c … [Read more...]

TOAM07 – Quotable Quotes

Pentecostal/Charismatic Post-It Notes has put together a page of short quotes from last week's conference. Here are a few that stood out to me from his longer list: "For many of us we don’t flow in the prophetic because we don’t understand our sonship. We can read many books, but if we don’t get it settled that we are sons, then we will live as orphans for the rest of [our lives] waiting for the command of God rather than the heart of God. The prophetic is not about just hearing words, but about … [Read more...]

TOAM07 – Final Thoughts Around the Blogosphere

Here's a round-up of good posts from other bloggers on the Together for a Mission conference. These will give you an overall impression of their thoughts and reactions to the conference. Links to Andrew Fountain's excellent brief notes on each talk have been added to my reports of the messages, and as mp3 downloads become available, links will also be provided to allow you to easily get to the audio of each talk. In addition to the sessions I have covered here on my blog, Andrew also wrote notes … [Read more...]
