What the Corinthian letters have to say about the charismatic gifts

Of course for many charismatics 1 and 2 Corinthians are among their favorite books of the Bible. If I may be allowed to make one comment as I introduce these verses, it would be instead to ask two questions. If these verses do not apply to us today, why are they in the Bible?  And, on what basis can we determine which other verses also do not apply to us?  I have already posted verses that speak to this matter from Acts, the Gospels, and the OT. I give thanks to my God always for you because of … [Read more...]

John Stott on non-authoritative NT prophecy

1482186_10151780081126569_159557811_n

As far as I know John Stott was a cessationist through and through.  This makes his attached statement about  New Testament prophecy all the more credible and significant. It is worthy of our consideration because what is happening here is that a good biblical scholar is allowing the Bible to take him in the direction of something that could potentially undermine his position.  We all do well to approach the Bible with a similar reverence.Of course there are degrees of charismaticism and ce … [Read more...]

Why cessationists are wrong about prophecy

20131016-093651.jpg

Later today the Strange Fire conference hosted by John MacArthur begins. A few weeks back I expressed my concern about some of the publicity for this event seeming to accuse all charismatics of being blasphemers. This event also prompted Terry Virgo to share a video about how Lloyd-Jones encouraged him as a young charismatic.I will be watching at least some of the event online. But one thing I am not expecting to hear is a novel or convincing argument from Scripture. I just want to state … [Read more...]

7 tips on how to hear the Word of the LORD (1 Samuel 3)

Imagine the cessationists of the boy Samuel's time. They would have pointed to the relative absence of the supernatural, and said "Clearly God has stopped talking." How wrong they would have been. We see though, that even in Bible times there were seasons when "the word of the LORD was rare." How much less should we be surprised that over the centuries there are periods when it seems God is intervening in our world less, and others when he is intervening more. I know that some of my readers are … [Read more...]

NT prophecy is for today and is NOT authoritative

None of these reasons listed below are unique to me, but I thought I would collect and restate them here for you. One of the best writers on this subject is Wayne Grudem, and though I have not gone back to his writing in producing this, I am sure that his influence will be seen in this list. For more on the outworking of all this practically, please see my series on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. To be provoked to pursue God wholeheartedly for all that he has for us, watch Tope's recent sermon at … [Read more...]

John Piper on prophecy

John Piper has been sharing a series of short videos on him speaking about the gifts of the Spirit. The first was on tongues. I now want to share what he had to say on prophecy. Here are some excerpts to whet your appetite: "I have been significantly influenced by Wayne Grudem's book on prophecy . . .I think our tendency is to despise what the New Testament treats as prophecy . . . Prophecy in the New Testament doesn't seem to have the same scripture quality, inerrant, inspiration and authority … [Read more...]

A prophetic word from John Piper for the new reformed movement

Reformed people often forget that Piper is almost as much of a charismatic as I am! He is no doubt a bit more cautious than me about gifts, but he does believe in them. In this video clip he shares what he describes as a prophetic word that has a warning for the reformed movement today. You can read the transcript or watch it here: … [Read more...]

Wayne Grudem on whether God’s revelation has really stopped

This video might surprise some of my readers. Wayne is well known as a reformed theologian. Arguably he and Piper have between them, with some help from Keller and Carson, led to this resurgence of "Young Restless and Reformed" that so many people talk about. So when a man like that argues that God has not stopped speaking since completing the Bible, it is worth listening to what he has to say. Wayne is theologically charismatic (believing that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today) and … [Read more...]

A Prophecy Told Me I Should Marry – Spiritual Gifts Q and A 3

The details of the following situation have been changed to protect the anonymity of those involved.Q. A friend of mine has come to me for advice. His girlfriend has told him that one of her close friends told her that God wanted them to hurry up and get married. He is not so sure as they have only been going out for three weeks.A. The first thing to say is that your friend needs to be reminded that modern prophecy is not authoritative. When it comes to affairs of the heart, in my opinion, … [Read more...]

How to Test Prophecy

In today’s post I continue to share an edited transcript of my sermon on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The following is a list of questions to ask yourself as you test a prophecy: Is it upbuilding and encouraging? Does it leave you feeling positive? Even if there is an element of rebuke in it (sometimes that does happen), there should be a positive feel to it. Does it lift Jesus up? Is it honoring and glorifying to Jesus?  Is it consistent with … [Read more...]
