PROVERBS – What is a Proverb?

In our introduction to the book of Proverbs at Jubilee the preacher mentioned the fact that proverbs are not promises, they are principles. I have been thinking a lot about that since. My new friend, Dan Phillips, has some great posts about proverbs that, among other things, help to unpack that. I am sure he won't mind if I extract some quotes and interact with them here. The first post is where we find the reason why proverbs are not general cast-iron promises.Dan reminds us of some definitions … [Read more...]

PROVERBS – Diligence in a Lazy World

This past Sunday I was privileged to listen to the second part of our series on Proverbs. This time we focused on the topic of work and, of course, the sluggard featured heavily in the sermon. It is a sermon that is well worth a listen, and I commend it to you. What better time than for me to share with you a collection of proverbs related to the sluggard.I would love for some of my readers who have blogs to take one of these proverbs and use it as a springboard for a post. In a sense, the book … [Read more...]

PROVERBS – Are Bloggers Scoffers?

Last Sunday I posted the first in a series of posts I am planning which will be a collection of Proverbs by subject. Today I thought I would share with you proverbs about the scoffer. As Tope pointed out in his sermon (linked to in last week's post), the scoffer is one of two types of “fool” mentioned in Proverbs. A quick search of the Bible will reveal that there are few mentions of the scoffer outside of the book of Proverbs, and that, not surprisingly, all mentions are negative. That might not … [Read more...]

PROVERBS – Get wisdom! Get Understanding!

People often say that common sense is not common. Last Sunday Tope began a sermon series at my church. His sermon is available online and forms a fantastic introduction to this amazing book of the Bible. The audio of this sermon is available online. To me, it seems that as well as simply reading the book through, this book lends itself well to collecting verses together by subject. I have had some fun using my Logos Bible Software to do just this with the book of Proverbs, and thought I would … [Read more...]

ABOUND IN HOPE! – A Sermon on Romans 15:13

The following is notes from a sermon on hope. True hope is a uniquely Christian thing - like faith and love. More recently I have also posted about how hope that goes beyond a grave makes a real difference to the way in which we grieve. The audio of this message is now available to download from my church's website or by subscribing to our podcast. If you are interested in a glimpse of the preparation that lies behind a sermon like this, please see my post from earlier in the … [Read more...]

Monday Musings . . . and a Sermon About God Condemning Sin in Jesus (Romans 8).

Debate continues to rage over at my post entitled, Did God Kill Jesus? Am I Alone? (Actually the answer is definitely NO as MacArthur, Piper, Lloyd-Jones and CJ can all be counted among those who are with me on this!). Anyway, undeterred by all the controversy, I preached yesterday morning out of the concern of my heart on Romans 8. The talk, "Free Because of Jesus," is available already as an mp3 download. Although I will end this post by sharing my notes, I would like to encourage you to … [Read more...]

Needy People Need God – 1 Samuel 1

The audio from Sunday's sermon is available to listen online or via the podcast. God helped me, and there was a good response to a call for prayer. One young guy made a public declaration of the faith he had come to over the last few weeks in private. There is great joy in heaven over one sinner who repents! Here are my notes, although they are perhaps less complete than usual.IntroductionWelcome to the family. Want you to share in our joy. We unashamedly love kids here!Joy of new birth only … [Read more...]

An Easter Message – the Jesus who polarises people

This morning I preached a sermon in our Easter Celebration. The mp3 file is available for download from my church website. I focussed on the annointing of Jesus by Mary, and how Jesus polarises people. Here are the notes I took with me to preach from, although the message itself probably varied more than usual from them as my laptop which I was using to read the notes decided to shut down just as I began to preach!Mt 26, Mk 14, Jn 12Easter = kids -Easter bunny isn't it? don't miss the chance … [Read more...]

Entrusted with a job

This morning I preached on stewardship - here are my notes, the audio is also available: One thing everyone of us has in common is the desire to feel we have accomplished a job well. This applies in our church life, in our home life and in our life at work. Different jobs suit different people of course- we all have differing abilities. I know for me that one kind of job I am definitely NOT called into is anything involving fixing things in the house. People say that for me DIY means … [Read more...]
