Suicide and Religious Faith

Today I share the second question in our broad conversation about faith and mental illness. Last weeks question is still open for you to post your replies. Today's question is very sensitive and requires great tact. But it is not possible to speak about mental illness without speaking about this. An old man and his faith in a big God

With John Piper retiring as a pastor, it is a reminder that many of our Evangelical leaders of today are, to say it delicately, of such an age that transition is inevitable over the next few years. It is easy to forget that these leaders themselves built on a foundation laid by others who went before them. That knowledge, and our faith in the sovereignty of God should make us full of faith for the future. One such great of the past is still very much with us, some 30 years after he himself … [Read more...]

Church community work in the UK is valued at over £2.5 billion per year

In the current anti-christian climate it is vital that we do two things.  1. Demonstrate to the world just how much good the church can do for them even in temporal matters. 2. Make some form of common cause with those who are of other faiths. The secular mind is trying to tell us that people of faith just fight with each other, do no good to society, and in short, ideally, all religion should be mocked, and eventually banned.  This recent article on a UK blog gathers some interesting data … [Read more...]

Preach and pray, love and stay – Mark Dever

Here are a few notes from the pre conference session which just ended entitled "The disciple making pastor" by Mark Dever Matt 28 & 1 Peter 5 Jesus is The Senior Pastor Like Jesus a good pastor lays down his life for his sheep. How should pastors do this? 1. Preach Making disciples doesn't only happen one to one. Many churches are orthodox on paper and dead in practice. We must give ourselves to preaching and not programs. The heart of your ministry is your private study. 2. Pray Show … [Read more...]

Desiring God live conference stream

I'm here at the Desiring God conference . As we landed my flight attendant said "welcome to Minneapolis where the time is 7:30 and the weather is very cold!" The weather may be cold but the fellowship and the teaching will be warm I am sure! Fortunately thanks to modern technology you can join in too! I will be sharing a few brief notes of my impressions of at least some of the sessions. But better than that, you can tune in and watch the conference live over the Internet. The … [Read more...]

What book do you give people at the brink of becoming a Christian?

I thought it might be a good idea to sometimes turn this blog over to you my readers to allow you to share ideas or resources. What I am wondering today is what books do you give to people who have either just made a response to the gospel or who seem at the brink of doing so. For today's exercise I am not looking for books of apologetics that seek to answer the questions of unbelievers. Not am I asking for basic discipleship books. I am interested instead in books that you might call a … [Read more...]

Huffington Post Live: Smug Married Club Debate

Tonight I was invited onto Huffington Post Live to debate attitudes to marriage from singles and attitudes to singles from marrieds. I think it was a very interesting discussion that shows the very different ways we all think. I think I shocked them when I told the guys not to treat women like urinals. I also said that marriage is actually really hard (though rewarding!), and unless you make a decision that it is for life it's unlikely to ever work. I told them marriage was like a death, but … [Read more...]
