How can I walk with God without falling?

Many of us have forgotten what it is like to walk without a sat nav guiding us.Even when I go nordic walking in the forest I tend to rely on my phone's map app to direct me.We miss therefore some of the sense of the metaphor 'walking with God' that the Bible intends.Walking with God doesn't mean we never take a wrong turn and even get lost.It doesn't preclude stumbling and falling.God promises to be the voice saying 'You are going the wrong way'And to pick us up when we … [Read more...]

How not to hear “away from me I never knew you!”

Many.Let that word sink in a moment.Many.Not a few.Not a theoretical group. Not a hypothetical warning.Many.Notice how complacent they are.Feel the pride. They think they are in.Prophesying. Casting out demons, mighty works.Perhaps we could add preaching and leading.Maybe writing a blog.Doing things 'in Jesus name'Part of the 'in crowd'Looking terribly spiritual to others. But not to the Lord.No to the … [Read more...]

“You have eaten and drank, now work, and enjoy it!” – The Bible

"There is nothing better for man than to eat, drink, and enjoy his work" (Ecclesiastes 2:24, HCSB) If you are anything like me you have eaten way too much food over the last few days. The Bible is clear that we can and should enjoy our food, and enjoy our rest. But it is no surprise that the verse I am looking at today comes from the same book of the Bible that says 'There is a time for everything . . ." (Ecclesiastes 3).It is good to "eat, drink and be merry" you are only being Biblical! I … [Read more...]

Bless the Lord. Forget not his benefits!

We are a very blessed people. We are also a forgetful people. Or let me own that more personally, I am a forgetful person. Today I read Psalm 103 and it reminded.  I have a God who blesses me even though I deserve none of it. I have a God who forgives ALL my sins, who heals ALL my diseases, and who CARES for me. How often do I forget all this? How often do I live as a functional atheist? How rarely do I really stop and say THANK YOU, humbly acknowledging that the very air I breath was given to … [Read more...]

45 practical ways to improve your health and wellbeing

Despite being a doctor, I have not always been very good at taking good care of myself physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. So a few years ago I constructed a list of practical advice as much for myself as for my readers about how to strengthen what I call the four pillars of mental health and well being.Today, I went back and expanded the list, which now includes links to articles on the web and some resources to help you improve your health. The resulting complete … [Read more...]

Rejected by us. Raised up by God

“Have you not read this Scripture: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?””‭‭(Mark‬ ‭12:10-11‬) Have you ever stopped to think about how remarkable certain Scriptures really are? Overfamiliarity numbs us to the stark surprising reality.Last night my son George who is just eight commented on the story of Judges. He said something like How could they say, you know how God rescued us and di … [Read more...]

A family divided against itself will fall

"... if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” (‭‭Mark‬ ‭3:25)‬ ‭ READ more at Bible Gateway. ‬‬I was reading Mark 3 this morning. The theologian in me immediately started thinking about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Maybe one day I will add my thoughts to the myriad of others. But instead another verse hit me in the eye today. To understand what Jesus means here, we must leave aside any notion of the windows of a house taking up arms against the bric … [Read more...]

Jesus’ anger at hardness of heart (Mark 3:5)

And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. (Mark 3:5 ESV) READ more  at Bible Gateway.  Hardness of heart means simply failure to soften your heart. It means failure of empathy. A rejection of someone else as a person. How to not be driven by what everyone else wants from you (Mark 1:33-38)

That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door . . . And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I c … [Read more...]

When God commands, do we immediately follow?

And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. (Mark 1:17-18) Bible Gateway. One of the features of Mark's gospel is the phrase 'And immediately.' Despite Mark's brevity, his gospel contains more than 70% of the uses of this Greek Word in the New Testament (Source: Logos). He uses the same word so often that some translations decide not to translated it to avoid the constant repetition. The ESV is not one … [Read more...]
