Cupcakes to help with the rant.

[Friendly reminder that if you're going to link to me you should use the proper pronouns. I know you've seen the comment, please fix your entry. Adding in that you put quotations around one of my names before, this seems to be more a case of your discomfort with my gender than a typo. As for people who link to me and do use the proper pronouns - thanks. It does actually mean a lot.] I've been considering what to write the past few days. I'm working on a few posts about my shrines, another … [Read more...]

A Few Points

tumblr_mmsyr4SKHm1rya3cfo1_500

(Though I’m not quite sure why I’m making them; they’ve been pointed out, but it seems people either aren’t understanding or aren’t listening. I suspect the latter.) Pop culture spirits do actually respond to prayers and petitions and can perform healing and other works. Not all of them, but certainly some. Just because they haven’t responded to you (perhaps because you’ve never reached out to them) doesn’t mean they don’t respond to other people. While some people … [Read more...]

Fear is Not the Goal

Rattle Snake by Kelsey Beckett

I get down on my knees a lot for my gods and spirits. (And you should read that in all the ways you can, just so you know.) When I began working with the Ophelia, it was all fear and all stress all the time. I remember asking what she wanted from me, that she was putting me through so much. What did she want, that she was dragging me so low.  Why was she carving holes into my body and soul - I knelt and begged and pleaded. And then she came to me like the ocean, like the River, and I … [Read more...]

Oh No New Things

Fly Me to the Moon by =Vashtastic

I woke up today to this post over on A Forest Door. (Okay, I lied; I woke up to dishes and then read the post.) I brought up the posts linked to, which can be found here and here, and settled in to read before work. I knew going in I would disagree - I'm a pop culture guy, a fangirl, the kind of boy who grew up on fanfic. I've got geekery all over my practices. I thread my religious ideas into my fanfiction. I skip back and forth, teeter and watch and wait to see if something useful will … [Read more...]

Redux Rant on Belief

tumblr_mj1yurMJVs1rkdwbyo1_500

Everything I tried to write last week was angry. Everything came out resentful and hateful and irritated, and while I was certainly feeling those things, they were keeping me (along with some other issues) from writing anything useful. When I am being direct and calm people call me angry, so I can’t imagine how people would react at seeing me really, truly angry and going on an unrepentant rant. Now that I have my irritation a bit under control, and after reading some blog posts and quotes … [Read more...]

modern heroes

My brother and I are both partial to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

I happened across this post on Agora about hero worship that focuses around superheroes, and it made me want to do a little dance. While tumblr has me regularly immersed in what we call 'pop culture paganism', I haven't encountered it that often elsewhere. (And one of my posts on it received a comment that people are free to believe what they want, just as others are free to laugh at them. I think it should be obvious that laughing at someone just because they're different is a tad, just a … [Read more...]

small spirits

Fairy Godmouse by 'ursulav

When I make the offerings, I put them by the door. Just a small tray filled with milk and bread, left out for the faeries. In the morning I fill those bowls and the rest of my offering tray with water, incense, food, and other offerings for my gods and spirits. A formal morning offering helps me set the tone, but all throughout my day I’m interacting with ‘smaller’ spirits. Though I feel close to the gods – and when they come to me, I sometimes weep with emotion – I am closer to the … [Read more...]

songs for the Dierne

images

I wasn't able to get up a full post today, but there will be one coming tomorrow. Until then, here are four songs that are especially fitting for the Dierne, one of the Four Gods I work with. These songs mostly highlight the combination of playfulness, urban life, and danger of this god, and two were picked out by a friend who is also working with this god. 4. Repo! the Genetic Opera - At the Opera Tonight 3. The Ready Set - Killer 2. Phildel - The Wolf 1. Fall out Boy - … [Read more...]

net practice: e-shrines

Even though I originally hated roses, they are important in both my religion and personal spirit work. Now I see them all the time.

This post is the beginning of a series (two per month) on Pagan and polytheist internet practices. I plan to cover the pros and cons of blogging and social media and their effects on religious practices and communities. I hope to go into depth on the positive, constructive uses of these tools, as well as how they are helping a new generation of Pagans and polytheist navigate their religious landscape. Whether you like it or not, the internet is a vital part of being alive (at least in the US) … [Read more...]

briefly: on diviners

It took me years to find a deck that would talk to me.

[Important note: My computer suffered a pretty major break yesterday. I'll be getting it fixed tomorrow, with luck, but I'm not sure when it will be fixed. As such, I'm not sure when I'll be able to write up a big post next. However, there are computers around I can use - please bear with me though!] I read Tarot cards. It might be more accurate to say I listen to the cards and speak what they say.  One of my decks prefers to focus on the internal landscape of the querent, while another … [Read more...]
