Basics: the Clarene (Spirits)

rendezvous by erebun

For the next few weeks, we'll be delving into the 30 Days of Devotion, a devotional writing project that helps us explore the gods we worship. We will do each of these for each of the Four Gods. If you are an Other Person or exploring the Four Gods, feel free to add your own comments – or join in!If you have another topic you would like to see written on, you can email me (aine@daoineile.com) or message me on Facebook – but my writing will likely go to one of my other blogs, as we're foc … [Read more...]

Basics: About Divinity

by Diana Hun

Every Wednesday, we’ll go over basic concepts and important practices in the Otherfaith. Join us every Wednesday to learn more about the gods and their religion.(Though I will do my best to present the Basics series in a logical order, they won’t be perfect. The Otherfaith is only four years old, after all, so we’re a little rough along the edges. If you have suggestions on how or what material should be presented, please speak up!)About DivinityIn the Otherfaith, we have our Four (+2 … [Read more...]

Musings: Pride

tumblr_mdro7tHmAt1rdv16ko1_500

Every Friday, in the 'Musings' series, we'll be exploring in-depth or complex topics related to the Otherfaith and our gods. These will be wandering, wondering posts, and not presented in any expected order – they are entirely based on events or occurrences that happened during the week. This Friday, we're focusing on the concept of pride in the Otherfaith.*My planner includes a variety of blocks, each sketching out when to study what, even when to eat – and also when to pray. Right al … [Read more...]

Why New Spirits

tumblr_mx8roppMNW1rsnlwoo1_500

As I’ve been working on more in-depth primers for the Otherfaith, I’ve returned again and again to certain questions. One of these is, “Why worship new gods and spirits?”Why not worship an older, attested-to group of gods? Why not work with folkloric faeries? Why not choose a specific culture to draw from? People get a little nervous about new spirits, or at least ones that aren’t pretending to be ancient and historic.(And that, perhaps, is the key – that these spirits and gods are not fo … [Read more...]

Rooming with Spirits

Food brings all sorts of people, and spirits, together.

Firstly, go read this post over on the Wild Hunt. The rest of this post won’t have anything to do with what Jason’s post discusses, but you should go read his post anyway since it is excellent. What I am going to talk about today is living alongside spirits, or, as Sterling says, sharing your home.I was the first person to move into our house. The day I did, I gathered my supplies of incense, candles, and offerings. As I walked up to the house, I asked to be let in, and after feeling wel … [Read more...]

Why I Don’t Worship My Ancestors

I'd much rather return to the sea.

This post is going to have a lot of anger in it, so I want to start by saying - I don't think it is wrong to revere one's ancestors. Ancestor worship is simply not something I currently do, and this post is about why I will not ever revere my ancestors of blood and bone/biological ancestry. Working with the dead, communing with the ancestors - I am not saying those practices are worthless. This post is about why I, personally, cannot work with my ancestors. Some day I may eventually revere … [Read more...]

Monstrosity + Human Superiority

tumblr_mp9wrbXllK1rya3cfo1_500

I trust the Morrigan, completely. But trust Her to what? Never destroy anything I care about? No, actually. It isn’t Her nature. I trust Her to be Who and what She is. That is, not human, not inherently conscious of human needs and limitations, not necessarily concerned with all the same priorities that I am. –Morpheus Ravenna When the Dierne came to me, at first I saw a very beautiful young man that held the world is in his hands. When he lifted his mask, I saw a monster.Like any god, each … [Read more...]

Small Spirits: Supplies & Schedule

I'd say, 'who doesn't like cake?', but I know like five people in my life who don't like cake, so.

We’re finally getting to the actual action of interacting with the little spirits in our lives. Please go read the first two posts if you haven’t already – they are here and here. I’ll also be re-exploring the issue of ‘monsters’ in another post, mostly as it relates to the Otherfaith though it can hopefully be applied to other practices! Here is a relevant bit from the first post of this series to keep in mind as we go forward: Faeries, here, are liminal spirits that are connected to humanit … [Read more...]

Four Gods: the Dierne

Morning coffee is a favorite offering for the Dierne.

Before we begin covering how to worship the Four Gods, I want to go in-depth into each of these ‘new deities’ (you want to know who you’re talking to, after all!). Each of the Four will receive their own post, and as before, questions are very welcome. These posts will cover their role in the Westernlands and our world, their relationships with the other gods, and links to other relevant posts.the Dierne         “Most beloved of the Four Gods,” the Dierne is the god I have the closest an … [Read more...]

Four Gods: the Ophelia

If you're wondering about the food pictures - they act as ideas for offerings as well as little e-offerings.
