Libby’s resignation

From AP newswire "Cheney Adviser Resigns After Indictment":

WASHINGTON – The vice president’s chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby Jr., was indicted Friday on charges of obstruction of justice, perjury and making false statements in the CIA leak investigation, a politically charged case that will throw a spotlight on President Bush’s push to war.

The article also notes:

Democrats suggested the indictment was just the tip of the iceberg. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the case was larger than Libby and "about how the Bush White House manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to bolster its case for the war in Iraq and to discredit anyone who dared to challenge the president."

It’s a nice slogan, but shouldn’t Harry note in passing how incredibly few Democrats actually "dared to challenge the president" in any way? 

Noone could’ve predicted these legal problems for the Bush administration, but anyone with a pulse could’ve predicted that what was up (Bush and the neocon brigade) would eventually come down, and that when gravity eventually kicked in a record of principled opposition to this madness would come in handy in the political debate and at the polls. 

Too bad the Dems were so busy thinking in the short-term and following rather than leading that they completely squandered the opportunity to distance themselves from Bush’s agenda.  Now, their belated objections ring  hollow, and they’re not able to fully capitalize on the train wreck that’s slowly unfolding in this administration.
