In the aftermath of 9/11, while Muslim leaders issued condemnations of terrorism, many American Muslims hid in fear of retaliation from their fellow Americans. Unfortunately, this was seen as complicit agreement with the attacks and triggered the litany of “Where are the condemnations?” tirades from right-wing talk radio and blogs. However, a sizable number of Muslims and Islamic organizations have gone to lengths to “prove” their patriotism to their fellow Americans in their public statements. This July 4th, leaders of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and the Muslim American Society (not to be confused with the American Muslim Society of Imam W. D. Muhammad, which shared that name until recently) are planning a joint convention in Philadelphia that will be the mother of all patriotic Muslim events. Organizers say the event will be a forum for Muslims to show their patriotism, celebrate the holiday, and to make a statement about the struggle for liberty and justice. “What better way to tell people that American Muslims are not different? We are Americans,” said ICNA official Abraham Quadri about the conference, which is expected to draw 15,000 attendees. “We are going to celebrate in the heart of liberty. What better way of making a statement?” Events at the convention will include a reading by Muslims of the Bill of Rights at the Liberty Bell on July 4th. “We are coming to Philadelphia,” said ICNA president Talat Sultan, “because Philadelphia stands for the ideals of American liberty and freedom.” While the photo op of Muslims honoring American ideals at the birthplace of America might turn a few heads, it will probably seen a little disingenous to other Americans (and indeed, some other Muslims). After all, Muslims have been vocal in their criticism of US foreign and domestic policy since 9/11, and many have felt betrayed by a president who received 72% of the Muslim vote. Still, the event is meant to convey the message that whatever disagreements American Muslims have with particular policies or leaders, the ideals that America represents are appreciated by Muslims who call it their home.
