Tuesday’s presidential election results proved traumatic for a number of Muslim Americans. Almost immediately a spectrum of emotions reigned — fear, confusion, uncertainty, disbelief, affirmation and even, determination.

Like other Americans, many of us are shocked that misogyny, racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia seemingly prevailed – embodied in a single individual who will now occupy the most powerful position in the world.

Some remain understandably fearful of that almost surreal development and its implications, from civil rights and civil liberties to U.S. interventionism abroad. Still, others view the results as affirming long-standing convictions about racism in contemporary America. Significantly, we are also determined to navigate the certain challenges ahead with strength and courage.

In response to this vast morass of sometimes conflicting emotions and viewpoints, I turned to diverse members of our community – leaders, scholars, activists and professionals – who took a moment to share their insights, perspective and inspiration for contemplation.
