Long Time Passing

Long Time Passing January 27, 2014

The world has lost one of its greatest voices for civil rights and one of its greatest singers and writers of Hymns of Social Justice.  If I had to name just one voice that has influenced me to be liberal it would be Seeger.  It is impossible to pick just one of his songs that has influenced my life so I will do several Pete Seeger themed posts over the next couple of days.

“Where Have All the Flowers Gone” may be one of Seeger’s best known songs.  It has been performed many times by many artists including The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Joan Baez, The Searchers,  Richie Havens, and many more.

With all of the violence and intolerance that has made the News of late, with all of the wars that we are still fighting, when school shootings occur too regularly, when Governors of States can still deny people their civil rights, when our President has an open license to murder with drones  we still need to ask ourselves the refrain of the song, “When will we ever learn, when will we ever learn”

Here are two great performances:

And a performance by Joan Baez celebrating Seeger’s 90th Birthday:
