Once in Royal Jethro’s City.

There was a nugget of a find at the local Thrift Shop today, “The Jethro Tull Christmas Album.”  Yes, it is true; the same band that gave us "Aqualung" released a Christmas album in 2003.  I have just started listening to it but I am already impressed by the Social Justice message of a song titled, “A Christmas Song.”   “A Christmas Song” starts with familiar cords and the words form the first line of the classic hymn “Once I Royal David’s City.”  But then, one line into the song, it starts tak … [Read more...]

I Love Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder’s Critique of Guns

1245603983-eddievedder

Eddie Vedder, of the rock band Pearl Jam, offers a Utilitarian assessment of the gun situation in American society: In many ways, Vedder's thoughts remind me of the philosopher Jeff McMahan's argument that I looked at back in May.Vedder's argument about guns is not particularly articulate or sophisticated (and he can be both). However, it very much mirrors my sentiments about guns.In March, I referred to the gun culture of Wyoming as a a form of cultural psychosis. It is … [Read more...]

“Atheists have Rock N’ Roll”

serj1

I am not an Atheist, though I consider many Atheists amongst my friends.Fellow Patheos Blogger Rebecca Hamilton shared a video of the Steve Martin performing "Atheists Don't Have Songs." A you might expect from Steve Martin, the song is a satirical and it will make you smile. I think I prefer Martin the banjo man more than I do Martin the actor. The song is more a satire of the image people have of Atheists than it is of Atheists.Just ignore the straw men statements about Atheists that … [Read more...]

Pot? Bah Humbug. I’ve got the straight edge.

I really could care less about the movement to legalize pot or pot in general.I do not think it is because of my religion, as much as it is that I am leftist straight edge. Here is the Minor Threat song that comes to my mind when people raise any issue related to pot:Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, and later Fugazi, explained his song on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. More to come about Minor Threat, Fugazi, and Ian … [Read more...]
