Are the Sister Wives Mormon?

Meri, Robyn, Christine, Janelle, and Kody Brown

Absolutely. While they are not "mainstream" Mormons, as the Brown family refers to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Christ of Latter-day Saints based in Salt Lake City, they are very much Mormon. The thing that has intrigued me about the Brown family as I have observed them over the years is how mainstream Mormons react to them. The Browns, and other polygamists, make mainstream Mormons uncomfortable. This is partially because most Mormons want to get away from polygamy. They … [Read more...]

How does a Polygamous Family File Their Tax Returns? #sisterwives

1386990446.jpg

Well, they don't. At least, not as a polygamous family. This morning, Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn Brown spoke with me about a variety of issues. One thing I asked them about was taxes. No, not what they thought about taxes. But, as a polygamist family, how do they file their taxes? As Adam Alba, one of their attorneys, pointed out to Approaching Justice right after the Brown v. Buhman ruling, only Kody and Meri are legally married.¬†As a result, Kody files … [Read more...]

Las Vegas Vs. Online Gambling

2013-06-28 21.15.23

Casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson is organizing (and funding) a large-scale lobbying push against online gambling. Adelson, the head of Las Vegas Sands which owns high end Las Vegas Strip properties including The Venetian and The Palazzo, is well known for being a major financial backer of Republicans and conservative causes. While Adelson is claiming that online gambling will be bad for families and communities (I agree with him on that), why would somebody who makes billions from gambling … [Read more...]

A Year Later: Election Day 2012

2012-11-06 12.42.03

November 6, 2012 was a great day. We fully expected to lose. It had been a hard campaign, but it had been a blast. We met lots of great people campaigning in all 23 counties of Wyoming during those 8 months. I really enjoyed talking with people on their doorsteps. For all the resentment I have for the political class and party insiders, the main thing I gained from the campaign was how much I love people...regular people. That night, I was bummed that my friend Joe Barbuto had lost his … [Read more...]

Is Bryce Harper Hated Because He is A Mormon?

Bryce Harper (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:9TH_Bryce_Harper.jpg)

Ok, that is not really the question at hand. The panel at Post Sports Live from The Washington Post took at look at whether Bryce Harper with the Washington Nationals was getting hit by pitches because he is hated.  At the Henrichsen home, we really like Bryce Harper. He is one Shem's heroes. The fact that Harper is from Las Vegas is the first thing Shem mentioned when Lyndee got the offer to come and teach here. Are players like Harper being targeted by … [Read more...]

Another Liberal at Church!! (Adventures in Sunday School)

1375030337.jpg

We are loving our time here in Las Vegas. In addition to the abundance of In-N-Out Hamburger locations, we are very much loving our LDS congregation here in Vegas. They turned out in large numbers to unload our U-Haul. They have warmly greeted us on Sunday, stopped by our home to bring us peaches or to welcome our children, and they made us feel most welcomed and included at the Pioneer Day breakfast we attended yesterday. As you may know, I have a certain fascination with bumper … [Read more...]
