So, This is Tanzania…

It’s kind of amazing to think about the fact that we are standing on the surface of a ball that’s hurtling through space. We can get into an airplane and fly over the surface of that ball, and when we get out, we’re standing on another part. It’s the same ball, but things are so different. People speak a different language. Many of the plants are different. The food is different. And yet, so much is the same. It is the same big ball, after all. [Read more...]

Be Here Now

Economy seats in KLM widebody jet.

It’s the day before hopping on a plane I am wound up tight as can be. I can’t think straight. My breath is shallow. I feel fragile and cracked.

As I drive the tiny rental car between the place where I’ve been staying and the storage locker, a thought hits me right between my eyes. [Read more...]

Spiritual Sovereignty

COMUNIDAD COFÁN LAGUNA DE LA PERLA by Agencia De Noticia Andes

My heart bleeds for the religious traditions that have been lost to the onslaught of evangelical religions. Christianity isn’t the only one. Islam has wiped out many Pagan cultures, and so has Buddhism. But not all religious changes have come through force or evangelism. How should we Pagans act when we meet indigenous people who have left their traditional religions for these evangelical religions. [Read more...]

Developing a Daily Devotional Practice of Place

For many of us, there is no choice but to re-dream the magickal practices that we will follow and that we will teach to others. We can do so in an airy way with no grounding, and our practice will be as thin as the work we put behind it, or we can use the power of aspects of our own culture — of Western science and nature studies along side myth and legend from our ancestors — to provide us with some of the tools we use for that re-dreaming. By tying your religious practice to a daily devotional activity of meeting your non-human neighbors through guides, your sit spot and nature walks, you can find that “advanced” knowledge you have been hungering for. The Problem with Subsistence Living

A view of Bethel, Alaska

There are many of us who would like nothing more than to live a subsistence lifestyle. We would like to be able to live light on the land, in partnership with the Earth and the other creatures we share Her with. Unfortunately, there is a deep and unavoidable problem with that lifestyle, and we can’t reconcile the life we want with the life we find that we must live.

You are a slave to your cultural norms

When told the reason for daylight savings, the old Indian said, "Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot of the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket."

Last weekend the US entered Daylight Savings Time. This is always a moment of great grumbling as people lose an hour of sleep to the clock change. Facebook posts pop up with anti-Daylight-Savings memes of various types. This one in particular had led me to think a lot about the nature of the day and [Read More...]
