That Place We Keep Meeting

Two weeks ago I returned to the US from Scotland. The day after arrival in Seattle, I marched up to REI to buy myself a hammock tent that I'd researched online. Last Monday and Tuesday I hunkered down in the forest on a friend's land on an island not far from here. I meant to disconnect, to take three days off of work and travel just to let my spirit catch up with me in the new timezone. I meant to stay away from computers so that I could just listen to birds and the sounds of the forest. … [Read more...]

Amsterdam

This is my second trip to the Netherlands in just over a month. I sit outside smoking an American Spirit cigarette and contemplating the energy here. Water. Flow. Movement, but not necessarily to anywhere or from anywhere.Crossing the street is terrifying at times. I step away from the safety of the sidewalk into the bike zone, hoping that a fast moving cyclist doesn't appear out of no where to bowl me over. I reach the car zone and fast-walk across the lane before I reach the tram tracks. … [Read more...]

The Housing Bubble

Not my house. Just a building near by that I like the look of.

This weekend we had some friends over to the house. It was the first time we'd had friends over in a long time. It used to be a regular occurrence, but not lately. Before the friends arrived, I busied myself with housework. I cleaned and tidied and cooked. It wasn't drudge work. It was kind of fun. I was focused on creating a nice experience for my friends, so the effort had positive connotations. As I was getting things ready for our friends to arrive, it suddenly hit me that this space really … [Read more...]

The Holt

Land's edge in Lincoln Park, San Francisco

When I was a kid, I used to go out to Lincoln Park in San Francisco by myself nearly every day. These days, you can get a call from the cops if you let your pre-teen kids out of the house without supervision in California, but back then, it was completely normal. Every day after school, when my homework was done -- or when I claimed that my homework was done -- I would head out the front door and up the hill a couple of blocks to the playground. The park would usually be full of neighborhood … [Read more...]

Feeling Out of Place

Rainbow Over Glasgow

Last week I started to write a post, and then I abandoned it. It didn't feel right. I couldn't say what I wanted to say about my ambivalent relationship with technology, especially where it intersects with issues of Spirit. I dropped the post, half written and never completed it, thinking that I was only stuck because of the topic that I'd decided to write about. Today, after hours of hemming and hawing about what to write today, I realize that I'm stuck for a far deeper reason. It's hard to … [Read more...]

Different And The Same

NetherlandsFlight3

Over the past week I have been in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Glasgow, Scotland; London, England; and now I am in Manchester, England. The rain has followed me everywhere. I can see by the news that each place has gotten sunny after I leave it, so the rain must be following me around like a lost puppy. But the rain isn't the only thing that seems to be following me around. Lately I've been dogged by wisps of deja vu every where I go.I'm not talking about the kind of deja vu where you sit … [Read more...]

Clutha

Clyde, Clydeh, Clydhe, Cludha. The waters rise up, envelop you, take you down. Cold at first, oh so cold, but your core temperature drops, As he makes you his own. Warm now, in his embrace, you see for the first time, the history of this place. The visions play before your eyes, Scenes of battles, scenes of peace. Lives of dear friends in a dear green place. A foreign God, a man from the south, the true tales of a tree, a bird, a fish, a bell, and the path man took to create a … [Read more...]
