A San Francisco Girl Contemplates New York

Colorful New York

New York is an amazing place. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I'll freely admit that I have something of a prejudice against anything on the East Coast of the US. In my mind I imagine that everyone and everything on the East Coast is a caricature of the worst stuff you see in TV and movies. I expect people in suits who are oblivious to their own privilege and the suffering of others and I expect the rest of the population to be kind of hard and unfriendly. What I've … [Read more...]

Amsterdam

This is my second trip to the Netherlands in just over a month. I sit outside smoking an American Spirit cigarette and contemplating the energy here. Water. Flow. Movement, but not necessarily to anywhere or from anywhere.Crossing the street is terrifying at times. I step away from the safety of the sidewalk into the bike zone, hoping that a fast moving cyclist doesn't appear out of no where to bowl me over. I reach the car zone and fast-walk across the lane before I reach the tram tracks. … [Read more...]

Feeling Out of Place

Rainbow Over Glasgow

Last week I started to write a post, and then I abandoned it. It didn't feel right. I couldn't say what I wanted to say about my ambivalent relationship with technology, especially where it intersects with issues of Spirit. I dropped the post, half written and never completed it, thinking that I was only stuck because of the topic that I'd decided to write about. Today, after hours of hemming and hawing about what to write today, I realize that I'm stuck for a far deeper reason. It's hard to … [Read more...]

Different And The Same

NetherlandsFlight3

Over the past week I have been in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Glasgow, Scotland; London, England; and now I am in Manchester, England. The rain has followed me everywhere. I can see by the news that each place has gotten sunny after I leave it, so the rain must be following me around like a lost puppy. But the rain isn't the only thing that seems to be following me around. Lately I've been dogged by wisps of deja vu every where I go.I'm not talking about the kind of deja vu where you sit … [Read more...]

Gods In-Between

"In The Gloaming" (Atkinson Grimshaw--1878)

In between day and night there is a time which is also a place. When the sun sets, but before the world has gone dark, all things fade so slowly, so imperceptibly we almost cannot notice the difference, only that something is different. The colors seem to seep from the world, trees from brown and green to grey-brown, grey-green, then grey, then black. The river below the bridge where I stood today, the hills across from that river shrouded in darkening mist, the street behind me with the rush … [Read more...]

The Garments of the Gods

Druid Grotto

We have our reasons when we travel.  Work. Vacation. Friends and family and all the rituals of life and death with which we celebrate our existences and world our stories into each other. Sometimes wanderlust or curiosity, the need for refuge.  Sometimes we flee a horrible place in hopes of security. Sometimes we travel towards a new place, one we do not yet know.I don't know if we take our gods with us, or if they are always in everyplace, but I know they often look different.  I wonder so … [Read more...]

Traveling Toward Birth

Two nights ago my dreams were full of bus stations and train stations. I was travelling sometimes alone sometimes with a male companion. Sometimes I would be alone but would know that I had to find the male companion. The companion was sometimes a small child and sometimes an adult. Sometimes he seemed like he was a son of mine, or a grandson of mine, other times I knew that he was just a friend. He was a close friend, though, like family to me.We kept getting lost in the bus stations or on … [Read more...]
