How Enneagram Type 7 Informs The False Core Pattern

How Enneagram Type 7 Informs The False Core Pattern March 31, 2015

In the Unique Self Coaching Process we use the Enneagram particularly because the “cognitive-emotional habit” of each type helps in the discovery of one’s False Core Belief. Each week we are exploring one of the Enneagram types in order to give you a sense of each type’s particular beliefs and mini practices to help you become more aware of your own pattern with the intent of beginning to unloosen the grip of your False Self Pattern.

In the last two blogs we’ve been looking at the Head Triad which hold points 5 6 7. The energy of these points is masculine, linear, and detached. People whose home base is at this center have the potential to be particularly aware of ideas and the mental dimension of life. We’ll finish our exploration today with Enneatype Sevens who adopt a strategy that allows them to avoid deeper and darker experiences and remain more at the surface of things.

False Self Contraction in Sevens is revealed in diverting their attention to the pursuit of pleasure and projecting a rose-colored view on things, situations and people as a way to cover their fear of discomfort.

Here are the False Core Sentences/Beliefs followed by descriptions of patterns that are common to Sevens. If one of these sentences, and/or pattern feels familiar to you, you might want to explore the practices that accompany the pattern. Each of these practices is geared towards creating more awareness of the ways into which you contract. Creating awareness is the first step towards dismantling your False Core Pattern. Practices are most effectively when used daily.

Common False Core Sentences:

I’m an addict

I am depressing to be around

I ‘m not interesting/boring

I am too much

Common Patterns:

Focusing on pleasure as a way to escape pain

Observation Practice: During the day, tune in to the ways you avoid painful feelings before they are about to arise.

Daily journaling:

  • What were your motives when you felt driven toward a particular experience of pleasure?
  • Were you avoiding something? What?

Increasing the pace of your activity or planning and raising your enthusiasm

Observation Practice: Notice during the day when you accelerate your pace or    become over enthusiastic about something. Try to slow your pace and observe    what happens, especially if any emotions or sensations arise.

Daily journaling:

  • What are you moving toward?
  • What might you be running away from?

Distracting yourself with stimulating ideas while trying to focus on something less interesting or framing specific experiences negatively, in order to justify the act of avoiding them

Observation Practice: During the day, notice how you respond to constraints.

Daily Journaling:

  • What kinds of things do you feel limited by?
  • How do you react to these perceived or actual limitations?

Living for or in the future as a way of avoiding being present now

Observation Practice: During the day, observe what is happening when you are focused on the future.

Daily journaling:

  • What are your deeper motivations to plan for the future?
  • What is going on now, and what motivates you at a deeper level when you create these pictures of the future?
  • Is there something specific you are trying to get away from?

If you do not personally resonate with Type Seven, we invite you to ask yourself who in your close surroundings might be a Seven and how does this description of their way of functioning in the world, might help you understand them better? And if you think it’s appropriate, you might want to share this post with them.

If you are uncertain about your type and would like to take a free inventory we recommend either the Enneagram Institute or Enneagram Dimensions.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our journey around the Enneagram and that it has given you some insight into your False Core Belief. Our next blog will discuss why awareness of our pattern is the first step to changing it.
