What Do You Mean by “Scary”?

I drew Kali yantras a while ago.

I’ve met a new friend. We jumped right into some deep waters. She’s made some less than conventional life choices and has faced the consequences of people she loves telling her that she needs to get right with Jesus. I can relate, I told her. I’ve given many people many reasons to stop talking to me. Not only did I get a divorce in my early twenties, I ran off with a younger woman. Two good reasons for excommunication right there. But, I added, now I practice witchcraft and blog publicly about it … [Read more...]

Why I Am Not a Christian

mothermary

Reflections on Bertrand Russell’s speech from 1927. (Read the essay online here.)This is the only essay of his I’ve read. I recommend it. It’s short, amusing and to the point. Many of the arguments he raises are still being raised by those in the New Atheism movement. I want to use this post to talk very briefly about Russell’s essay, even more briefly about the New Atheism movement, and about why I, Niki, am not a Christian. We begin with Russell’s essay. It’s hard to deny most of his … [Read more...]

Broken Gods: A Book Review

BC_BrokenGods_1

Patheos - the overarching home of Patheos Pagan - does book clubs and anyone from any channel is able to join it. Most of the books don't interest me, but this month I decided to try one of the books. Broken Gods: Hope, Healing, and the 7 Longings of the Human Heart, is by Gregory K. Popcak, PhD., a Catholic, therapist, and fellow blogger at Patheos (Faith on the Couch).I'll admit the title intrigued me. I wondered what a Christian could be intimating by "Gods." The blurb suggested Popcak … [Read more...]

School is out! Summer has started! And Mama is already exhausted after 4 days! Many Gods West is in 6 weeks and we leave for a family vacation to Alaska in 10 days' time. If I'm not giving you fresh insights, please forgive me. I'll be posting some older, but awesome posts to tide you over.Occasionally I like to share what we're reading in our house. Here is what we're reading:KidsMy 7 year old is engrossed in the Wings of Fire series. I don't find them particularly well-written … [Read more...]

We Were Born Wild

My tiger son, age 4.

"Mama, we were born wild animals."My son, full of pterodactyl screeches and dragon roars, sits quietly in the car on his ride to school. He's telling his sisters about how mammals are wild animals, that humans are mammals, that in fact all of nature is wild. It's a deeply profound thought, if not entirely true. How domesticated we have become. How we domesticate everything we touch.Chickens are not wild. Very little is wild about our yards. Cows? Not wild. Not anymore. But … [Read more...]

On Turning 40

Last day of my 30s. This is how I roll.

Tomorrow I turn 40.I know, women are not supposed to speak their age. Keep the mystery alive or some such nonsense. Whatever. I'm proud to be the age I am. Normally, birthdays aren't a big deal for me, but this year? This year feels like a milestone.Ten years ago, right around my 30th birthday, I graduated from the Graduate Theological Union with my master's degree in religious studies. This year I'm watching my 1 year old scoot around the weed-ridden yard chasing after her older … [Read more...]

God is Not Either/Or, God/dess is Both/And

Tanner's Annunciation

An inelegant Catholic priest over on Patheos' Catholic channel has listed Twelve Reasons Why You Can't Call God "Mother."  You know I can't let that rest, especially because his reasons are dodgy on a variety of levels.I refuse to break down his argument piece by piece (who has time? not this non-Christian), but instead let me offer some thoughts from an unpublished doctoral paper of mine, which was to be the crux of my dissertation. This paper analyzed the works of Mark Miravalle and his … [Read more...]
