Many Gods, Many Peoples, Many Experiences

Many Gods West, which occurred last weekend in Olympia, WA, was a tremendous success. Yes, I’ll blow my own horn. How do I judge it a success? Because it exceeded my own hopes and expectations for the weekend.Polytheists are a diverse group of people. There is no one Voice. We come from a diversity of backgrounds, we honor a variety of gods and spirits, we face different obstacles in our practices - yet, when we come together to share our experiences we grow stronger as intersectional a … [Read more...]

The First Harvest of 2015

Lammas, or Lughnasadh, falls this coming weekend. This cross quarter holiday celebrates the first of the harvest coming in. It is the height of summer and the heat is reaching its peak (and my pique). As much as I prefer the grey, overcast weather that is supposed to be typical to the Pacific Northwest, I acknowledge that honor must be paid to the Sun that radiates its light and heat upon us. My garden is exploding in a wealth of zucchini, broccoli, and kale. The garlic is drying. The … [Read more...]

Broken Gods: A Book Review

Patheos - the overarching home of Patheos Pagan - does book clubs and anyone from any channel is able to join it. Most of the books don't interest me, but this month I decided to try one of the books. Broken Gods: Hope, Healing, and the 7 Longings of the Human Heart, is by Gregory K. Popcak, PhD., a Catholic, therapist, and fellow blogger at Patheos (Faith on the Couch).I'll admit the title intrigued me. I wondered what a Christian could be intimating by "Gods." The blurb suggested Popcak … [Read more...]

On Turning 40

Tomorrow I turn 40.I know, women are not supposed to speak their age. Keep the mystery alive or some such nonsense. Whatever. I'm proud to be the age I am. Normally, birthdays aren't a big deal for me, but this year? This year feels like a milestone.Ten years ago, right around my 30th birthday, I graduated from the Graduate Theological Union with my master's degree in religious studies. This year I'm watching my 1 year old scoot around the weed-ridden yard chasing after her older … [Read more...]

“Paganism is Not Political”: A Rebuttal

Last week I posted a resource list for more information on Paganism. In the list I included a link to Gods & Radicals, a relatively new website for Pagan anti-Capitalism. A certain colleague who shall remain unnamed told me "Paganism isn't political," a statement with which I whole-heartedly disagree. Here's why: The personal is the political. No, there is no political litmus test a person must pass to be Pagan. I know Pagans who are Libertarian, politically conservative, Democrat, … [Read more...]

What is Paganism? A Resource List

Yesterday I gave a presentation on Paganism at Seattle Pacific University. This is an annotated version of the hand out I gave the students. The list the student got did not have commentary, and the links were written out. Here, I've hyper-linked. I figured it might be helpful for others. One very important note: this list primarily reflects me, my biases, and my experience with Paganism. There are SO MANY books and websites out there. My aim was to inform, on a general level, college aged … [Read more...]

Paganism 101

Yesterday I had the privilege of presenting Paganism to 18 Christian college students. Dr. Jennifer McKinney, of Seattle Pacific University (SPU), contacted me and asked if I would be a guest speaker on Paganism in the New Religious Movements section of her Sociology of Religions class. Dr. McKinney is the sort of amazing, brilliant person that makes me wish I hadn't left academia. Of course I said yes!Although I could give the presentation anytime this month, I scheduled my talk for … [Read more...]
