Public Service Announcement

My blogging philosophy, like most of my interactions in "real life," is to not say anything about some one that I wouldn't say to their face. Occasionally it's necessary or prudent to say something to someone else, but even then I try to speak about my experience or my feelings about the person or situation. That is why I rarely weigh in on internet drama. Besides, by the time I get to it, the drama has usually died down.In my mind, blogging is supposed to be personal, informative, or part … [Read more...]

Polytheism, Politics, Discomfort, and Growth

Recently Rhyd Wildermuth, my co-conspirator behind the recent Many Gods West event, a conference for polytheists, posted about his experience of the conference. (I also have done so.) His piece provoked strong feelings - as most of his pieces do. In the comments of the piece and on his Facebook page, it is clear to me that people take issue with several things. Firstly, people take issue with Rhyd’s admission that some people thought Many Gods West (MGW) was an anti-capitalist gathering. S … [Read more...]

What Do You Mean by “Scary”?

I’ve met a new friend. We jumped right into some deep waters. She’s made some less than conventional life choices and has faced the consequences of people she loves telling her that she needs to get right with Jesus. I can relate, I told her. I’ve given many people many reasons to stop talking to me. Not only did I get a divorce in my early twenties, I ran off with a younger woman. Two good reasons for excommunication right there. But, I added, now I practice witchcraft and blog publicly about it … [Read more...]

“Paganism is Not Political”: A Rebuttal

Last week I posted a resource list for more information on Paganism. In the list I included a link to Gods & Radicals, a relatively new website for Pagan anti-Capitalism. A certain colleague who shall remain unnamed told me "Paganism isn't political," a statement with which I whole-heartedly disagree. Here's why: The personal is the political. No, there is no political litmus test a person must pass to be Pagan. I know Pagans who are Libertarian, politically conservative, Democrat, … [Read more...]

Expanding My Horizons

Many years ago I spent an extended period of time only reading works and listening to music by women. The male voice is overwhelmingly dominant in our society. Surrounding myself exclusively with women's voices and perspectives was soothing, inspiring, and very clarifying. I have decided that I needed to reset my perspective and do the same with race. The white experience is overwhelmingly dominant in our society. It doesn't help that I am and my world is overwhelmingly white. It's time to … [Read more...]

Ferguson is Not an Isolated Injustice

Monday night's announcement of the Ferguson findings had me in tears on Tuesday. (Black teenager Michael Brown was shot on August 9 by white police office Darren Wilson. Wilson was not indicted by a grand jury.) I want to share some of the things I wrote yesterday. So, this might seem a callous comparison, but bear with me. That same morning we had the dishwasher repairman out. The kind repairman said that our model was a durable one; that new dishwashers are pretty, but are only designed to … [Read more...]

Pagans and the (Zombie) Apocalypse

Editors’ Note: This article is part of the Public Square 2014 Summer Series: Conversations on Religious Trends. Read other perspectives from the Pagan community here.Lately, the only big picture writing I've read on the state of our world is from writers on the fringe of the fringe. Peter Grey and the writers at Scarlet Imprint have written some of the most heart-searingly honest and downright chilling pieces on how witchcraft and the state  of the world intersect. Grey's essay Rewilding Witc … [Read more...]
