(Not) Working with the Ancestors

IMG_0376

Almost every witch, shaman, or spirit worker I know talks about working with their Ancestors. Some magicians do it. Polytheists, if they don't work directly with their Ancestors, usually have ways in which they honor them. But me? I'm terribly conflicted.See, I understand the theory behind most Ancestor veneration and spirit work. It reminds me a lot of the tradition of Saints in Catholicism. Why not send up a prayer to some one who is invested in my well being and has experience in a … [Read more...]

Chastity vs Hedonism

Fasting. By Jean Fortunet via Wikimedia Commons

A few weeks ago (months maybe?) a reader asked me via Facebook if I'd write about chastity vs hedonism. Sure, I said. I like reader prompts...Chastity is related to abstaining from sexual activities of all kinds. Hedonism implies a rampant indulgence in all lustful desires. Hedonism conjures up images of luxurious excesses of all kinds of fleshly pleasures, not just sexual ones. I think the real issue in these words is what role does austerity play in our lives? Should it have one? If so, … [Read more...]

Being Called While Young

IMG_1193

"What I never saw talked about, in books, in blogs, was what it means to be called as a young person. See, I thought it was Grand, it was Good. I was called young, that meant I could do a lot! But what it really meant was that I gave up dreams that everyone dreams. I'd replaced them with visions of holy fire and new myths."Aine Llewellyn, former Patheos blogger, wrote this on her Facebook page recently. Aine is hard at work developing a new tradition, the Otherfaith. I admire her work a … [Read more...]

My Life is a Love Story

Falling in love is easy, if mysterious. It can be as simple as a chemistry-laden kiss.¬† It can be as complex as seeing a girl in an orange silk dress across a crowded room and knowing that my world is about to be turned inside-out. However, growing a love that is sustainable,¬†with healthy boundaries and joy, is the work of a lifetime. My life is a love story, and the Red Goddess is my co-author.Love stories get a bad rap, and for good reason! Courtly tales of romance from the Middle Ages, c … [Read more...]

Identity

My birthday was this week. Birthdays and anniversaries are good times to reflect on one's life, so I've been thinking about the last year of my life, about the challenges and successes. The greatest challenges for me in the last 12 months have all been relational. Since this time last year I have had a miscarriage, lost and/or ended three important friendships, survived my son being 4, and entered into the deepest of emotional depths with my husband. The struggles with my husband have been … [Read more...]

Not of this world

On my way to the grocery store I pass two churches. The first is a Lutheran church, an open and affirming one. I visited it last year, and while I thought highly of it, I couldn't sit through an entire service. These days I barely notice the large brick building with its stained glass and preschool playground. Until it hosts the farmers' market in its parking lot. Then I am there weekly, even if I bypass its front doors and sanctuary. The other church is much larger (churches here seem to be … [Read more...]

Desire

Last night my husband and I went on a date. An actual dinner without children. We talked. We sipped drinks. Halfway through my sidecar I realized I was fired up, giddy about my subject matter, and rambling. That's how I feel when I'm full of desire. It's a stream of passion, enthusiasm, happiness, intensity, and a feeling of losing track of time.Desire is on my mind. Yes, the sexual kind, too. Spring will do that to a person. I embrace the lengthening days, the growing sunshine, the … [Read more...]
