Navratri begins!

After doing my dark moon cleaning of the altar, I changed my altar just a little in preparation for Navratri. For the next 8 days I'll observe this beautiful Hindu festival of Shakti principle. (I wrote about Navratri last year and recommend reading it for a little background.)Navratri focuses on the manifestations of Durga, the Mahadevi, or in my Feri eyes, the Star Goddess, the Great Source from whom we all emerge and to whom we all return. For the next three days I'm focusing on the … [Read more...]

Looking Ahead

I love October. It's my favorite month. I adore autumn, with the changing leaves, the fresh grey skies, the cool, crisp air, and warm sun (when we had it!). It's also a month of holidays. Between mid October and early November I feel like it's my High Holy Days. Here's what I'm looking ahead to:Oct. 15 - the dark moonOct. 16-24 - Navratri (Hindu observance of the Goddess in Her Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati forms)Oct. 18 - Alaska Day (the day the US purchased Alaska from Russia) I don't really … [Read more...]

What do you mean by ‘scary’?

I've met a new friend. We jumped right into some deep waters. She's made some less than conventional life choices and has faced the consequences of people she loves telling her that she needs to get right with Jesus. I can relate, I told her. I've given many people many reasons to stop talking to me. Not only did I get a divorce in my early twenties, I ran off with a younger woman. Two good reasons for excommunication right there. But, I added, now I practice witchcraft and blog publicly about … [Read more...]

Prayer of Rededication

An acquaintance of mine and Feri initiate, who goes by the internet nom de plume Happydog Potatohead, wrote this beautiful prayer recently. I was struck to the quick when I read it. Not only do I revere Kali, but Happydog speaks of the fire, the burning, the boundaries - these things which I've been feeling, pushing against, embracing. This prayer expresses my heart more accurately and eloquently than I could myself. Enjoy. My Patroness, my Maitresse de ma Tete, is Kali.Ghosts … [Read more...]

Magic for a dark night

24 hours of magic. That was my weekend. It started with a Feri gathering in Seattle on Saturday evening. We did some mediation and chanting about Godsoul. There are no coincidences, and I was only mildly surprised that the chants overlapped with some work that I've been doing in relation to some non-blogged about stuff. I've woven those words in with my daily practice and that dovetailed nicely into the work with the group. These days everything - everything - is about soul alignment. … [Read more...]

The newness isn’t really so new

New(ish) quarter, new altar, new practices, new challenges. I'll be honest: I don't feel up to newness right now. It might be blog project fatigue, or it might be the unique challenges that this quarter presents, on top of all the changes from moving and having sick pretty kids lately. The new altar is small and outside. It's a little metal cabinet I found at World Market Cost Plus. (It turns out that I love that store. I find so many great altar items there.) Inside the altar I have candles … [Read more...]

Fifteen Years in the Wrong Shoes – part five

This is the final post in my 'testimony' series. (You can follow the links to parts one, two, three, and four.)My family landed in Wales in the early autumn of 2009. It was a grand adventure. Husband had never been to Wales before; I had been once for three days two years prior. But the gods said go, so we went. The rational reason for our moving to Wales was that I wanted to be nearer to my adviser and the academic community while working on my PhD. My area of specialty was the Virgin … [Read more...]
