Spiritual Boundaries and Full Moons

SupermoonSpokaneWAUSA by Astrotool

Full moons and witches go together like sriracha and rice (hey, it's my blog, I'll make my own comparisons, thank you!). Tonight's moon is this year's largest supermoon - a full moon that is slightly closer to the earth and thus looks larger than usual. Not only are these moons extra gorgeous, they are extra potent. It's no wonder I've been extra jittery and overwhelmed this week! Over the years I have found that I react to both the full and dark moons. It feels a little bit like spiritual … [Read more...]

What Do You Mean by ‘Scary’?

Left hand graveyard path at Hawarden St Deiniol, by John S Turner via Wikimedia Commons

[This was originally posted in fall of 2012]I’ve met a new friend. We jumped right into some deep waters. She’s made some less than conventional life choices and has faced the consequences of people she loves telling her that she needs to get right with Jesus. I can relate, I told her. I’ve given many people many reasons to stop talking to me. Not only did I get a divorce in my early twenties, I ran off with a younger woman. Two good reasons for excommunication right there. But, I added, now … [Read more...]

What is a Witch?

[From October 2011.]For about a thousand years the witch has been drawn as an ugly, old woman, in league with the devil, living on the outskirts of a village, waiting to take advantage of the virtuous and/or small children. She flies on her broomstick and gathers with others under the full moon to do terrible rituals. Later, she acquired an outfit of black and a pointy hat. The Halloween stereotypes we associate with witches are not new; they are deeply embedded in the Western … [Read more...]

Superheroes, Magic, and Kids

By Nicholas Gemini via Wikimedia Commons

I spend a lot of time around boys aged 3-7. My own son is 5 1/2. Among this demographic, I see a lot of superhero t-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, toys, capes, etc and hear a lot of superhero talk. In my house we go very light on branded items and superhero images. In some very important ways, even the Powerpuff Girls, a cartoon I'm a fan of myself and for my kids, falls into the superhero category. When one of the other five year olds in my son's weekly karate class asked why he couldn't do the … [Read more...]

On Being a Student

By Fewskulchor (Own work) via Wikimedia Commons.

I know a little something about being a student: I've got a high school diploma, a bachelor's degree in history, most of a vocal performance degree, a master's degree in religious studies, and a few years of doctoral work in theology. I've spent probably ten full years in voice lessons with a total of nine different teachers and I've spent the last 8 years studying Feri/Faerie witchcraft with a total of four teachers.Yet, for all that studying, on my own and with teachers, I realized … [Read more...]

The Four Powers of the Sphinx

Bonaparte Before the Sphinx by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1867-68.

The Four Powers of the Sphinx are as follows: to Know, to Will, to Dare, and to keep Silent. I can't tell you the history of this grouping, if it's ancient or not. I know Crowley talked about them. T Thorn Coyle wrote an entire book based on them. I've been thinking of these powers a lot lately, mostly in light of the last one.I'm good at Knowing. I have always been a self-motivated learner. If I can't find some one to teach me, I will press forward myself. I have an advanced degree in … [Read more...]

2014 Begins

This is twice as large as in previous years, so I had to stand on my chair to get a picture.

My 2014 New Year's collage took a little bit longer than I'd anticipated, for several reasons. First, I have two small kids, both of whom wanted to see what I was doing, touch what I was doing, and ask questions about what I was doing. I couldn't do the entire collage on New Year's Eve, after the kids went to sleep, because I was in bed before 10 pm. It's how I roll. Finding quiet times throughout the days to focus, cut, and paste without little fingers near was quite the challenge. Eventually … [Read more...]
