Moondays

I'm going to discuss Female Things, like fertility and menstruation, so if this is not your cup of tea, I'll just say¬† - thanks for stopping by! - and wish you well on your way. This will likely be a little TMI for some. When I started this project my baby girl was five months old. I was exclusively breastfeeding her and it wasn't until last month (at 12.5 months postpartum) that my period returned. Like girls beginning to menstruate for the first time, the postpartum body takes several … [Read more...]

Let’s talk about Practice

I was asked last week just what a practice of Place looks like. What does it consist of? Good question! The honest, straight up answer? I don't know. You've heard me say this before. In fact, at the start of every quarter there's been a recognition that I won't know until I start Doing. Most of what Place means to me could easily be summed up with: going outside and paying attention. I plan to do a lot more of that. To the casual observer this might not be particularly spiritual or religious, … [Read more...]

Vulernability

I know vulnerability doesn't relate specifically with Christianity. But it seems to be the theme of late. At least this week. Ok, who am I kidding? It's probably my life's work. Why? Because I am lousy at it.A couple of people directed my attention to this TED talk on vulnerability yesterday, so this morning I sat down with my cup of tea and decided to listen to it.... while I read email. Because, it's about vulnerability, see, and what could it possibly say that would demand twenty minutes … [Read more...]

Resolution

So I went to sutra study. I was able to read a few comments on yesterday's post before I left, rather in a distracted rush, for yoga class and sutra study. Many of you made excellent points and I was left feeling awkward, silly and vulnerable. I particularly hate feeling vulnerable. I am much better at over thinking things, if you hadn't noticed. When I started this project I knew this quarter would be a challenge for me, but I didn't realize just how hard it would be for me. I've spent most … [Read more...]

Conflict

My lunch today was amazing. Like, really, really delicious. But the conversation was good too. Husband and kids and I sat around the table talking about the day thus far. 'Oh I'm going to yoga tonight,' I said, 'but I'm undecided if I'll stay on for the yoga sutras study group.' After explaining myself, my husband just looked at me and said, 'Why don't you write about this?' Good point. So, here's what I told him. After yoga class tonight - asana, physical practice - I've been invited to stay … [Read more...]

Lent comes early this year

...For me, at least.Today is Fat Tuesday. Not being culturally Catholic, I've never had a grasp on when Mardi Gras occurs, but I think it's today - a huge blow out before Ash Wednesday tomorrow when Lent begins for Catholics and other Christians. Eastern Orthodoxy doesn't have this tradition. The two weeks leading up to Lent (which begins next week for them) are Meat Fare (eat the meat) and Cheese Fare (eat all the dairy but no meat), where they wind down before their vegan Lenten fast.I … [Read more...]

Praying like a Pilgrim

I was hoping to have all of The Pilgrim's Tale, a Russian spiritual classic, read for review today. Even with kids and limited reading time I can plow through a book if need be. This time? I'm savoring it. In fact, I'm inspired by it.One of the things I love about the Eastern Orthodox tradition in all its 'flavors' (the Church is divided along ethnic and national lines) is that mysticism is front and center: in its liturgy, traditions, stories and practice. Mysticism is more than theology or … [Read more...]
