Birth as Edge Walking

Kali, from the Calcutta Art Studio, 1885.

Last month I entered my third trimester of my third pregnancy. I felt the shift about 10 days before the 'technical' date; I felt the fullness of my belly growing, the spread of my hips, and a certain mental shift. With my first child I didn't know what to expect; with the second and with this third one, I started out the pregnancies thinking, "Joy! I get to experience giving birth again! What a blessing!"And then sometime in my 6th month I woke in the night, and I knew I was entering the … [Read more...]

Superheroes, Magic, and Kids

By Nicholas Gemini via Wikimedia Commons

I spend a lot of time around boys aged 3-7. My own son is 5 1/2. Among this demographic, I see a lot of superhero t-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, toys, capes, etc and hear a lot of superhero talk. In my house we go very light on branded items and superhero images. In some very important ways, even the Powerpuff Girls, a cartoon I'm a fan of myself and for my kids, falls into the superhero category. When one of the other five year olds in my son's weekly karate class asked why he couldn't do the … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Confessions of a Buddhist Witch, part 3

By Lishu Institute (http://www.flickr.com), via Wikimedia Commons

This is the final installment of Willow Moon's comparison of his dual observance of Faerie Witchcraft and Tibetan Buddhism. Here are the previous parts one and two. I am so grateful to have such a thoughtful practitioner share their observances with us!*****Ethics are perhaps the area where Buddhism and Faerie Witchcraft diverge the most.  In Buddhism there are many rules for conduct but they all boil down to the basic ethics associated with the three levels of vows taken before … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Confessions of a Buddhist Witch, part two

By Hoi-Man Hau (Harmony Bells), via Wikimedia Commons

Welcome to the second installment of Willow Moon's comparison of his two traditions, Tibetan Buddhism and Faerie Witchcraft. You can read the first part here and Willow's bio. Enjoy!*****Both Buddhists and Faerie Witches gain knowledge and understanding of ourselves and the world through inner knowledge combined with an acquired knowledge passed to us by our teachers and spiritual friends.  Inner knowledge is the development of what we have learned from others by mulling it over, … [Read more...]

On Being a Student

By Fewskulchor (Own work) via Wikimedia Commons.

I know a little something about being a student: I've got a high school diploma, a bachelor's degree in history, most of a vocal performance degree, a master's degree in religious studies, and a few years of doctoral work in theology. I've spent probably ten full years in voice lessons with a total of nine different teachers and I've spent the last 8 years studying Feri/Faerie witchcraft with a total of four teachers.Yet, for all that studying, on my own and with teachers, I realized … [Read more...]

Thangka Depicting Vajrabhairava. By anonymus (Sotheby's) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

Dual observance is a theme at my blog. I practice Traditional Witchcraft and Hinduism on the left-hand Tantric side of things. The following guest post is written by Willow Moon. I am honored to have such a wise teacher share his experience here.Willow Moon has had a long and abiding interest in traditional Witchcraft since the 70's which led him to be initiated and trained in a number of Witchcraft traditions.  In the early 80's he met his first primary Tibetan Buddhist teacher. He started … [Read more...]

The Four Powers of the Sphinx

Bonaparte Before the Sphinx by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1867-68.

The Four Powers of the Sphinx are as follows: to Know, to Will, to Dare, and to keep Silent. I can't tell you the history of this grouping, if it's ancient or not. I know Crowley talked about them. T Thorn Coyle wrote an entire book based on them. I've been thinking of these powers a lot lately, mostly in light of the last one.I'm good at Knowing. I have always been a self-motivated learner. If I can't find some one to teach me, I will press forward myself. I have an advanced degree in … [Read more...]
